I really liked RPG Maker 2003's setup with the shop screen. More specifically, how it had the sprites of the actors shown. Gray when they can't equip, colored and "walking" when they can--also a symbol to show if the equipment is an improvement or not.
If somebody could manage this, I'd be in your debt.
I should also mention that I use a script that increases the amount of frames available in a sprite sheet. Becuase of this, just showing the default character sprite won't work right ( or can it? )
