Didn't you say in that other thread Venom wasn't the true start of Black Metal? This interview... Well, documentary thusfar, said differently!

I'd close this, but really, think of it as a new start. I'm intrigued to see if Black Metal is really something interesting, rather than what they describe this fun Ghaal fellow doing to his victim. Senseless violence is fun, yes, but a genre of music based solely around it?

Then again, impression I got from like 2 minutes of watching a random documentary, I'll watch some more and comment again.

EDIT: and now it seems like they're a genre devoted solely to being hated. Honestly, the point? This seems like the immature prick in high school that hates capitalism and wears skater brand clothes and rants about how everyone is buying into the government conspiracy (or oftentimes, the church conspiracy)

No Andy, I meant Venom wasn't the only band that was at the beginning of Black Metal, actually those bands were:

Venom,Hellhammer, Bathory and Celtic Frost

And please watch more, you'll see the other side of the coin, that's when it get interesting.

No, they're not devoted to being hated. It's called Group mentality, Ghaal is opposed to it. Which is why he calls his fans "sheep-like", because they are. They follow his music, his ideology, and are too far up his ass to ever disagree with him. That is a sheep. Instead he, and others I know from the scene, promote self-imposed intellectual growth and not environment-imposed, such as Judeo-Christian organizations. Kind of a "find your own personal epiphany" idea. He doesn't tell anyone to do anything. Something I agree with, more or less.

Just wanted to elaborate on that.

Yes, the sheep-like mentality that seems to reign in this style (and others as well). Although it was always present, just a few had the strength of will to be different in my opinion (Gaahl, Varg, etc).
