TRIWEEKLY CHALLENGE #3: ~~~WATER~~~

The theme for August's triweekly challenge is

~~~ WATER ~~~
(see this thread for more information on triweekly challenges)
After a brief hiatus in July, we're rebooting Triweekly Challenges again! Hopefully a break from intense game making action has gotten you pumped and ready for another three weeks of spectacular development!
Weather. It affects everybody, and rules the planet. Weather is omniscient, having a constant presence in our daily lives. Most weather we experience is mild - maybe the occasional storm here or there. But sometimes, when the right atmospheric conditions are present, incredible things can happen.
Heat waves - the silent killer, leaving millions with health problems and scorching the earth. Tornadoes - the awe-inspiring menance that leave only twisted ruins and ruined lives. Hurricanes - massive storms with massive winds, massive rain, and minimal comfort. Floods - enormous walls of water that leave nothing behind. And blizzards - frigid storms that can bring entire cities to a standstill. There are a myriad of weather-related events out there, and it's up to you to stick them in a game.
All you have to do is make a short little game that somehow centers around the weather. Weather can play as big or as little of a role as you want, but it must somehow be a central theme to the plot. The weather doesn't have to be a big natural disaster or anything either, but it must play a part in the story.
Guidelines:
  • You can use any maker for this challenge. RPG Maker, Game Maker, anything you can think of. Don't be afraid to try a new program!
  • The game should ideally be at least 5 minutes or so long, though a longer game doesn't necessarily mean a better one. Don't worry about making something long - focus on making it entertaining.
  • You can still use any graphics or music you want, but make sure to give credit where credit is due.
Deadline: Monday, August 23rd
Once you are finished your game, PM the file to me. On August 23rd, all the games will be available for public download in another thread, where people will vote on your game.
You can use this thread to show off your game's progress, ask questions, or talk about the theme. You don't have to sign up, as long as I get that PM before August 23!
PARTICIPATE OR I WILL LITERALLY MURDER YOU
I might revive my underwater rpg idea. I have a partially written script.
I think my original goal was to make a short game in a month's time; but I didn't actually have time to make it.
I'll keep a log of everything I do each day. Then post the results.
I'd be interested in seeing other people's processes like how long it took them to come up with an idea and plan it out.
I know the last week is for reviewing/voting and all. But why can't we just go the whole month and then do the voting while we start the next challenge?
b-but then they wouldn't be triweekly challenges!!
The main reason I guess is mostly if people want to take a break before they participate in the next challenge. But if more people think a month would be a better time span then a month it is. (although they'll still be called triweekly challenges. B^I )
Awesome Bro
Well, how about changing it to 4weekly challenges!? ;). Anyway, It's up to you to decide.
By the way, I came by to say that I will be participating in this one. Already started to make my game. :)
Three weeks is definitely suitable for a challenge like this. Heck, I think it's already too long, when the minimum requirements are 5 min in length. Any longer and I find myself generally procrastinating until the very last week before getting anything done.
I won't be entering, as I've got my own goals to accommodate (sorry) but I'm looking forward to see the projects hatched from this simple idea!
Only 2 weeks left and I've barely done anything. Made a few test sprites and some speed painted panoramas:
What stopped me from starting this before was that I wasn't sure how to make it look underwater. And I still don't. Finding a creative solution is all part of the challenge I guess. I learned that even if Panoramas are the same dimensions as map sizes;any map bigger then 20X15 won't scroll properly. So I'll have to stick to small maps and use big maps only when the character doesn't have to interact with the environment.
ok well coyotecraft that still looks absolutely fantastic so don't stress over it! (or stress if you want, i don't want to impose :[ ) (do i come off as too much of a softie oh no D: )
I might try this. I was thinking of something ala "your a fish. Eat small fish to get bigger. Avoid fish bigger than you unless you like being dinner." or a diving game.
If you do, you'd better get crackin' - there's only 10 days left of the challenge! (although there's absolutely nothing wrong working on it after the challenge ends as well ;o )
*Thinks to self*(Feeding frenzy)
I've decided on a simple retro diving game called Wasserkrise, thanks to my friend Derekkoch. I've started on some production last night and have the frame of the project ready, I just need resources and I can get to making the eventing of the game.
Basically, you play as a diver who is diving through a series of maps about 20 width and 80 height. The main goal of the game is to get the alloted number of points within a specific time frame or reach the bottom of the current level without dying. The different objects are background objects (don't worry, they don't hurt you), obstacles (they do. >:D), treasures (collect these for points), HP/Oxygen bubbles (I'll explain these next), and the sea unfriendlys (such as sharks and sting rays). Now the diver has an health bar and oxygen bar, each displayed as six bubbles (oxygen, clear, HP=green) and are recharged by collecting HP and oxygen bubbles. HP depletes if you touch an obstacle or sea unfriendly, and oxygen slowly depletes every 30 seconds. There are five levels in all (or depending on ocean height, haven't studied the ocean in a while) and you can advance to the next level by completing the current one.
If there's still anybody planning on submitting something, this is just a reminder that you have until Friday to PM your projects to me! That's 5 more days!
