TOS2

alright so it's time for the 2nd sympohia game, i just finished pirating it (ohohohoho)

fuck year

Okay so honestly this game is superior to TOS1 in every possible way.  Better character designs, more likable cast, better voice actors, better writing, better graphics, better battle system, better plot, better better better better better.

However I still can't reccommend it right away D:

ToS2 is for the HARD FUCKING CORE crowd.  If you have not played Tales of Symphonia (and to a lesser extent Tales of Phantasia) you will not know what the fuck is going on and even if you piece it together you won't understand why you should care.  This game serves to BRIDGE ToS and ToP and is very deeply entrenched in the lore of those games - you can't start the series off here it just won't make sense.  If you wanna play this game, beat ToS first at least, it will make this game a thousand times better.

Also Richter is amazing, i love his voice acting and he is just motherfucking cool.  Like OKAY i know anime games always have strong silent types who are tall and good looking and wearing HORRENDOUS OUTLANDISH OUTFITS but imo Richter is kind of beyond the stereotype as he doesn't mind wearing reading glasses with battle armor and he's the first person I've ever seen in any anime-based game (or even any ANIME) to dual weild a battle axe and a broadsword.  fuck YEA

Also I'm going to spoil the games big twists right here.  And i KNOW some of you who haven't played it will click and then kick yourselves.  Ohohohohohoh :3
Lloyd is attacking other cities in order to gain the centurion cores to permanantly seal ratatosk away - he can't kill ratatosk as that would merge the demon world with the human world but he can't allow him to wake up either - he's not affected by core insanity as the others predicted due to martel's blessing and he didn't tell anybody what he was doing as regular people who touch the cores are driven mad.  emil died in lloyd's raid on palmacosta and ratatosk conjured a 'dummy' emil to host his spirit, whom you play as for the whole game.  you never actually see the real emil.
Aren't you glad you clicked?  or not??? :3

Only Tales game I've ever played is Tales of Destiny, and I fucking loved that game. I haven't really known of any others that were good, so mayhaps I shalt download 1+2

Pretty much, not gonna argue here. The main reason I couldnt stand the first TOS because it was so randomly generic. I saw the cover of this one and Im kind of thinking the same thing.

That being said, It still one of the few RPGs on the Wii so im going to at least try it, but if it sucks im going to give it back to my friend (who im gonna borrow it from).

I've got a... differing opinion on the game myself. Spoilers below because I'm an asshole and want to ruing your gaming experience. Without the "g".

In terms of graphical capability it's great for a Wii game, and I like the soundtrack although none of it's really memorable. However...

Exploration has been shot in the balls, because the World Map began PMS'ing and left so it could go out with Final Fantasy instead. Rather than a World Map, you select a location and instantly jump there. As you can imagine, this makes traveling faster- but there's almost nothing to really explore and discover. Aside from making the game really fucking linear it's not quite as fun- you no longer get Mr. Skullz to fight, Katz Island is just selectable right in front of your damn face and nothing's really hidden from you or a surprise anymore. Granted, this is only a problem if you're like me and like to explore the World Map aimlessly just for the hell of it, and if you just want to get the fuck to where you're going you'll love the system, but it makes the world seem a lot smaller.

The plot's rather unimpressive, I mean really, Yuan appeared like, twice. What the fuck. It's better than TOS1 though, but that doesn't really say much. Characters though... oh shit.

Emil is a whiny, pathetic, over-apologizing little bitch and he really doesn't get much better. It was almost painful to hear him speak, but luckily, in battle he digivolves turns into Ratatosk who's a hugeass improvement over Emil and will sky combo the enemies ass until they cry tears of blood. He's also a lot more violent, because EVERY TIME YOUR PERSONALITY IS SPLIT IN HALF ONE SIDE MUST BE AN ASSHOLE AND THE OTHER ONE PATHETICALLY NICE, SAID THE LORD GOD. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it must make for some awkward situations.

Marta... I love Marta, but she's a filthy whore. She falls for Emil like, instantly, which is comedic at first until you realize she means it. Then you want to like her because she has the coolest female weapon ever, but at the same time she probably has 3 STD's so you're cautious. She also likes the whole self-sacrifice deal. Yeah, I know, the greater good is something only bad guys care about because good guys are short sighted, but really what the fuck. She takes this whole "no more greater good thing" to heart, because she tries to give her life like, ten million times throughout the course of the game. Or maybe it was two.

Richter... he's badass, that's already been established. He's also fucking awesome.

And then there's Tenebie, who's... well... he's old. Yay?

Of course, there's nothing really wrong with them as a cast, aside from Emil who should really go kill himself already, but the problem is that Emil and Marta are the only 2 playable characters who can level up. In the entire game. You can get monsters that level, but they're controlled by NPC's. You can get the old cast, but they max at level 50 and level through plot events, and until you get to the final arc of the game they like to continuously leave you for your neighbor because she's prettier. So that whole play with 4 people thing you've come to love? Well it'll be like play with 2, then 3 on and off, and then 4 on and off, then 2 again... until you're about 12 hours into it. That's about half the game, because this one's not nearly as long as TOS1.

On your second playthrough you'll find yourself leaps and bounds ahead of the old cast in level if you gave yourself any kind of EXP boost, and will soon quickly find your monsters rape better than they do. It'll make you sad, because they'll always just suck harder than everything else. Everything.

Speaking of the monster system... it's mediocre. You can catch monsters, if you conquer the elemental grid with 1 primary element matching 4 out of 5 of the secondary elements, but that either means you started the battle lucky or you spammed healing spells as fast as you could to catch your skeleton Laura. Aside from the ridiculous requirements when it comes to catching, you can only have 4 with you at a time, and these'll quickly dominate all the others so you'll end up wondering why the fuck you'd catch anything else to start. The monsters level very quickly, and evolve quickly as a result. They also grow quickly. The second evolution of slime can max HP halfway until it's evolved, the second (third?) evolution of Wolf isn't very far behind. (BTW, what's with Imp? He's easily the hardest to level but he transforms back into... Imp, no second or third stages at all... lame). Every time you digivolve transform your monster, it retains 20% of it's stats, and loses all of it's skills. That's not a problem since they'll only learn like, 2 skills ever, so you can kiss magemonsters goodbye. With no level of control, you can't really use them in play with friends either, so you'll either end up using only them or neglecting them depending on how much magic you want to cast and how many friends you have.

Skills and abilities... for a whiny bitch Emil swims in skills, while Marta craps out abilities. I have no idea what's up with that, since you can only hotkey so many askills (4 normally, however you can also get another 12 or so if you use the other assign function, but waggling your wiimote and nunchuk feels gay and it's really unnatural anyway) and because Emil doesn't need any skills. He'll just sky combo them until the gream breaks. Marta, meanwhile, doesn't have enough points to assign to her abilities, so the entire thing is pointless. And, since you can't level up your TOS1 guys, you can't ever get them to ability rape. Ever. It makes me cry inside.

The sidequests are also the same maps done over, and over, and over again with a slightly different backstory to them. The maps change every chapter, but it's still highly repetitive and the rewards are balls. Still, they help meat the game up.

With all that bitching done, the game isn't bad, it just isn't very good. Final thoughts, starting with the cons-
*Very Linear
*Repetitive Sidequests
*Crippled multiplayer experience
*Crippled Monster Catching system
*Very little exploration
*Emil
*Leveling for only 2 playable characters
----------------------------------------------
*~30 hours gametime (take it as a pro or con as you will)
*Classic ToS battle system
*Richter
*Entire cast of ToS1
*Decus
*A lot of monsters and ways to transform them if you're feeling up to it
*A lot of sidequests
*Synthing System is fun

I agree both of your points. I'd say over all the game is so-so. It's not horrible, but after playing through it the once I can't really say I'll play through it a thousand times like it's prequel or its "sequel" (if you play into the whole ToS->ToS2->ToP deal). I'll have to agree though that Decus and Richter have to be two of the best characters ever. And if you can get past her baby talk that crazy sadist Alice also racks up points along with Tenebrae (honestly, for the NPC controlling the idiot monsters he has some of the best lines in the game) for best supporting character.
