This Week on .Org (June 14th-21st)

This Week at .Org
HBGAMES.org, that is!

What happened this week?

This week is overshadowed (no pun intended) by three major developments:

- Successful server migration
- Site rebranding
- The 2nd Annual .ORGy Awards

Server Migration

First of all I would just like to say that nothing that happened this week was to spite shadow. In fact, we all love shadow, especially for the contributions he has made in both running the site and also working with us to do this all successfully these past few days. Shadow, you have been an invaluable member of the team, and if anything moving the site is a gift to you, as we know hosting .ORG is a huge ask especially for free.

We've been planning this for some time now and it has taken a lot of work to get this far. Unfortunately you may remember a couple of weeks ago, the server .ORG was hosted on was lost and a week of posts was destroyed with no way of getting them back. This was an unfortunate setback which made us have to think deeply about moving servers. Hosting on Dreamhost was not ideal, as I'm sure you have seen with the 500 Errors and so on. Now we are on a dedicated box and hosting is pretty secure for the future.

All five admins have taken part in the switch (even the ones we haven't seen in a long while!), thanks to Brew, Etheon, Shadow, Sophist, Treg, and Venetia, and the rest of the staff for making all of this possible and seamless.

Feel free to post lots and lots as you did before, there are a lot less load limitations now than there were with Dreamhost. As such, Guest viewing will also return, it was a minor setback but a direction we did not want to go down nonetheless.

Site Rebranding

Welcome to http://www.hbgames.org.

The rmxp.org url will still work for some while, but essentially we are no longer rmxp.org. Update your bookmarks.

What is hbgames? It stands for Homebrew Games; basically we are pushing towards a more game-making oriented website than just limiting ourselves to Enterbrain products (or even RPG games).

Don't worry. The site is still the same place you all love.

The 2nd Annual .ORGy Awards

The 2nd awards ceremony of .ORG has begun, you'll find it here:

Nominations have started, just PM your nominations to the anonymous staffer Pluto using the template in the thread! We've already had a hefty amount of nominations! Start thinking about how you can promote yourself, or be a better member in the run up to the actual voting ceremonies!

While we're at it...

Who are HBGAMES Staff?

There has been a lot of confusion over the years, mainly because RMXP.org was so prone to change with nobody in the outside world catching up with what was going on. Hell, some people still think admins from a couple of years ago are still admins when they have left, been banned, been shot out of a cannon, or had sex changes and joined convents by now!

So who are HBGAMES Staff?

Administrators
They are in charge of running the menial tasks of getting the site working, managing domains, technical site support, and carrying out any labour the other staff can't do themselves. They are also there to help PR and to act as mediators in any staff conflicts.

- Brewmeister
- Shadow
- Mega Lenin
- MUAHAA THE FRENCH
- Venetia

Global Moderators
They have moderator powers across all forums, and are basically there to keep everything inline as well as to participate in community events, and make sure the forums are going in the right direction.

- Asch
- Perihelion
- Commodore Whynot
- ││█║▌│║▌║ ▌│║▌║ ▌││ (Arbiter)

Moderators
Moderators are in charge of specific forums, keeping them inline and helping members out in their respective areas of expertise. They are invaluable members of the team.

- Boon
- Cruelty
- Dadevster
- Regi
- Zeriab
- ∫∆µ (Etheon)
- ┌П┐(◣_◢)┌П┐ (Holly)

So what happened this week!?

In the Symposium, HBGAMES.org's mature discussions board, Wyatt asks: is eSocialising... socialising?

Please welcome:
- Lazer Kirby, Naith, Dovydas, Evil, 21stPrimarch, DojoDesigns, sedated-4-ever, starfantastica, lx_theo, FromFinland, and GogoGadget to the forums! Phew, that's a lot!

In Game Making Discussion, Regi wonders what we all do about giving rewards for quests in our games, while JBRist is recruiting for a reviews team!

Becoolioman's mapping contest has entered the final round this week.

LudiChris1 wants us to eat his face. Hmm.

In terms of projects, Tachiba's Rancid is an interesting Concept Development thread that you might want to check out, as is Mundane's With Love, an adventure game with an interactive environment.

Regi has posted a new rendition of the "Helpful Resource/Tutorial Links" thread, in Pixel Art Analysis, which is a handy thread for all would-be artists.

Awesome Bro

I can't see myself ever calling this site HBGames.org, it just doesn't seem right, and I think whoever editted the logo could've done a better job really, buuuut it's still the same site I guess, despite what I think, lol.

Hey, I edited that logo! (and it's just temporary)

Now it's time to put your mouth where my money is... er, money where your mouth is?... something like that.
If you don't like the logo, make a new one.

Wyatt, nice job. thanks.

dont worry the logo is changing real soon. like tonight. some other things need changing too, like the skin and the "RMXP.ORG" text all over the place.

you can still call this .org, we'll always be .org. rebranding away from the name of 5-year-old outdated software is just a given

whoever wins gets credit.
I makes no matter to me. It's a placeholder. I don't care so much what it looks like, as long as it contains the appropriate information.

P.S. if your next post doesn't contain a logo, I'm changing your user name to 'Latrine' (full of s#*t) :scruff:

Be Well

Awesome Bro

Okay, so I've been working on this logo for quite an inhumane amount of hours, and I'm finally satisfied with it;

newrmxporglogo.png

I think it gives off the correct information, and says a little something about us as a forum, wouldn't you think ?

i can't finish the logo while im at work @_@
That was directed at JBrist. You just snuck in a post in front of me... :scruff:

J, I love it! I don't think it matches the furniture, but hey.

Be Well

Jason

Awesome Bro

Well I think we should host a debate about changing the logo to the one I made, obviously we'd spice it up a little, maybe add some apples, oranges, a few pears, a pitch fork, you get the idea.

Homebrew Games? Why? Why that? No one will ever find it under that name. I really don't like that idea, rmxp.org should stay rmxp.org, regardless of what game makers are on the site. But I won't argue...

we're always going to have that domain. or atleast for a very very long time. and doubtlessly we'll also be referred to that for ... perhaps forever. but we're moving away from enterbrain product dependency into something more broad, and the name no longer suits that purpose ~

also, a "home-brewed game" is a term for an extremely independent game usu. without a budget or else a tiny budget. i.e. something developed in someone's basement.

our new acronym is HBG.
so you can refer to us as Homebrew Games, HB Games, HBG, or simply ".org" ;)

Jason

Awesome Bro

Yeah but Ven, for alot of us, who've been here forever, it's just going to take a while to adjust to the change, I mean, I've got it on my favourite and quickdial on Opera as RMXP.org, I just can't see HBG.org or anything cutting it, it just doesn't sound right, it's like your best friend changing their name to Jeremy McSquireton, it just doesn't feel right y'know...

Aaaanyways, my logo is better than ANYTHING you'll come up with, so HAH ! :fap:

HB Games just sounds really nice and fresh. I actually really like the name, it brings something new and refreshing. I'm sure we'll get used to it soon.

And with any luck, people won't be afraid to post their non-RPG Maker games anymore since our name won't give the sense that we're restricted to RPG's. This is a really good thing, and the admins really deserve our thanks. G'job, guys!

If everyone kept everything the same just for the convenience of people's speeddials, we wouldn't be where we are today. Laziness isn't an excuse for not wanting to progress~

So... re-branding? That means if I ever get to a point where my program can be used by others, you guys might actually post about it, or for that matter, allow me to post about it beyond the game and application development board?

where would you want it posted :blank:

we're going to be adding boards for other popular makers here pretty soon. if you're making a piece of software and people like it and it's relatively popular then maybe it could get its own parent level board ~
