(these are in no particular order)
1. Being misunderstood- This one irritates me to no end. It can be easy to be misunderstood on the net. Often for me it happens when I am being sarcastic. It just doesnt translate well over the net unless you use the /sarcasm tag which spoils all the fun. Many times Ive had to explain myself even when my intent should have been clear. "No, Im not really a follower of Norse mythology, I was being sarcastic." Other times people just assume you are an idiot because of one comment, because they are so used to dealing with idiots. (the internet is crawling with them dontcha know) I have been guilty of that assumption in the past, but after making false assumptions about people a few times and having whatever smartass comments I made towards them come back to haunt me, I've learned my lesson and try to give everyone a chance.
2. Stupid people- Some people are legitimately stupid. Its no accident they come off like buffoons. Like on the modding forums of which I have been a longtime active member, people often show up whenever a new movie is released requesting that someone mod in crap from the movie, like "teh 300 movy was awosome. Can sum1 plz make teh sords 4 me?" Of course thats just one example of stupidity. Once I beheld the most embarrasing, idiotic mispelling of a word, it left me in stitches. I just cant remember it any more.
3. Drama Queens- I cant stand it when people make threads about their girl troubles, or how they are contemplating suicide. Considering that I only visit videogame related forums, it seems like an exceptionally poor...well...forum...to air your dirty laundry. IMO these people are just looking for attention. Or how about the people that remove their avatar, shut down their websites and leave cryptic messages like "life is pain and I can pretend no longer, please delete my account." enouraging a flurry of frantic emails from the people who know the guy to make sure he hasnt offed himself. If you are really truly depressed, why on earth are you bothering going through all the trouble of logging into a dozen sites to delete a bunch of crap? Shouldnt you be in bed curled into a fetal position or something? I'm not a total heartless bastard but when people are transparently exploiting the real human condition called "depression"...just to get attention and make their empty lives somehow fuller...I find it hard to be compassionate. There seems to be an awful lot of people out there who think its "cool" to be depressed and suicide is romantic.
4. Condescending computer geeks- Hey, maybe you are one of them! If so...bite me! I dont care how big your "rig" is, it can never compensate for the thing in your pants! These guys come in all flavors really, from the guys who say that console games are for kids with ADD and PC gaming is the only way to go, to the guys who make smartass comments whenever confronted with someone who uses AOL. Just the other day someone made a thread on another forum saying he was having trouble getting DOSbox to work and wanted some advice. I offered the tip that you can drag and drop game exe's onto the DOSbox shortcut to start a game, rather than having to manually type a bunch of crap. A couple of computer geeks then proceeded to question my intelligence saying that I must have very poor typing skills and that I must be afraid I'll break the internet by using command lines. I wanted to choke them! No, I honestly dont know what a command line actually is but somehow I have managed to eke out an existance for myself but sooner or later my ignorance will be uncovered and I will be DOOMED!
Okay, Im getting a bit overheated here. I'll leave it at that for now even though I can think of a million other things to add to the list. Go ahead and add your own internet pet peeves or downright HATREDS. And if you are guilty of any of the above sins...may god have mercy on your soul if I ever meet you in real life.
