The Video Game Riddle Thread

This thread is for riddles based on video games.

Rules.

I
All riddles must be based on a video game. Riddles based on movies, books, or music are not allowed. (The only exception to this rule is main themes (such as "Snake Eater" (MGSIII) or "Eyes on Me" (FF8). Iconic music, such as the FF7 battle music or the chocobo theme, may be considered themes for this purpose.

Due to the massive number of games in existance, the range of acceptable games will be limited, in order to ensure that forum members have a reasonable chance to guess the riddle.

• As this is an English-language forum, only games with OFFICIAL english releases are allowed.
• There must be a reasonable expectation that people have heard of the game. Obscure games such as The Dark Heart of Uukrul or Wasteland would be unfair
• No game with a rating higher than "M" is permitted.

Riddles and reasoning must follow RMXP.org's content policies.

Riddles must be at least four lines long, and should not exceed twenty-four. The person posting the riddle "the riddler" must have reasoning to back up the answer. Likewise, persons guessing on the riddle must provide reasoning for their answers, in order to prevent random guessing. Due to the large number of possible games, riddlers must provide the platform, year of release, and publisher of the game the riddle is based on. In cases where publishers have changed names, of a game is published by a different company, provide both the original publisher and that for the re-release, if any.

I will post the first riddle. Anyone who can guess it "wins" and becomes the next riddler. They then have 24 hours from the time their correct guess is confirmed to post a riddle. If nobody places a guess withing 72 hours, the current riddler posts the answer and reasoning. After 12 hours, they can post a new riddle. If the post of riddler is vacant, the first person to post a riddle becomes the riddler. The post can becom vacant in three ways.

• The "riddler" does not post a riddle within 24 hours
• The "riddler" states that s/he will not post a riddle
• A victory is successfuly contested.

Please note that, while reasoning is required to post a guess, it does not have to be the same reasoning that the riddler came up with, so long as it is logical, and leads to the answer given. Likewise, some flexibility in the answer is reccomended. If the answer to the riddle was "Tifa", but the answer "Yuffie" was given with very good reasoning, it may well be a correct answer. Likewise, different ways of describing similar events or objects are possible. Keep that in mind.

Hints may be requested. It is advisable for riddlers to be ready to provide at least three hints. It is inadvisable to post a hint more than once every 24 hours.

Why don't you post a guess, any guess, first. Then I can see where a hint will actually be helpful. Just post reasoning with it. It's not as if you have limited guesses.

this is a pretty useless rule b/c most games that are A rated are obscure and non-mainstream so people wouldnt post it anyway.

this is kinda dumb imo, and is going to prevent some people from joining this. basically, the majority of these responses (if you get any) will be finaly fantasy and mario games. oh well.

I find that, in a competitive environment, even one without prizes, some people will try to stack the deck in their favor. It is pointless to have a riddle thread, if someone can guess a riddle and then post one dealing with an obscure indie game that very few people have heard of (thus virtually ensuring victory), thus, I am attempting to narrow the field as much as is practical here. The riddle threads I've participated in in the past were limited to parts of the Final Fantasy sereis (i.e. X and X-2 only), and even then some riddles were devilishly obscure. While that was not a stumbling block in that case, as the thread was fairly old there by that time (the narrow focus made thinking up new riddles harder, so grasping for obscure areas merely added interest.) The concept is new here, and even if it is possible for it to catch on here, it will not do so if the thread is hijacked. That's why I put the sections in question in place. If you can think of a better way to do that, please inform me of it.

As for the hint, stating that the game in question is FFIX (which it is) won't help muchs, as Squaresoft released only a few titles in 2000, so it's not that hard to figure out. Without guesses, I don't know if it's the double meaning of line #8 that people are stumbling against, or if they are thinking of a different type of answer (i.e. a sword instead of a cutscene). That's why I was reluctant to post one.

Not a bad guess, but you only answered the second half of the riddle. Had you addressed the first part as well as this one (your reasoning is wrong, but quite clever nonetheless) I might have accepted your answer, even though I was looking for something else. As it is, I'm going to have to ask you to try again.

your riddles rely too much on tangential connections and figurative language, and are really only apparent when working from the other end. both this and the example from ff8 could easily be taken to apply to any sort of final stand against anything, since there's not much that narrows the possible answers down. you need to work on making the riddle fit the solution, rather than making the solution fit the riddle. writing them isn't easy (it's probably harder than solving them,) but you just gotta work at it.

or maybe I just say this because I'm bad at riddles.

POST-LOCK EDIT: I had just noticed the console, developer, and year of conception information. there's your problem. it's much more informative than the riddle itself and quite undermines the concept of having a riddle in the first place since you're handing us too much of the solution in simple prose!
