The stupididty of society.

This topic is about a movie I watched, and how it relates to reality.

The movie was "The Mist" spawned from a novella written by Stephen King. I myself thought the movie was spectacular, because of the many concepts and themes behind it.

But anyway. Mist shrouds the entire town, and monsters within the mist start killing people...balh blah blah.
About 40 end up isolated in a grocery store, which is where I would be during the apocalypse. The antagonist of the story, clearly, was not the monsters at all, but an unstable citizen of the town. She preaches to them with small excerpts of the bible and then elaborated by mixing bits of her own propaganda in it.

She convinces most of the population of the store by the end of the film that anyone who didn't join her little congregation "apparently" caused the apocalypse. She manipulated them using fear. No different than the way hitler did it. Realizing she had control, she condemned a person to his death, and tried to sacrifice many others to "save the rest". The way she did it infuriated me, but the scary part is, I can easily see that happening in today's society.

Millions of minds could be swayed to do...whatever. Let's face it, society is deluded and apathetic. 

I want to know what you guys think.
They put blind faith in someone they knew to be absolutely neurotic, because apparently even that is easier than taking responsibility for yourself. And that's the basic theme of this post, "do you believe that could actually happen?"

PS sorry if that ruined the movie for you, I'd still recommend watching it anyway.  :tongue:

Ouch Miek. :sad: Anyway its true that people can be swayed easily especially in times where there is little hope/answers/solutions and I wasn't upset at that fact. I actually like to watch horror movies regardless of how terrible they are and you just ruined one for me. *Good grief*

Man, you're so cool. I can tell you're above all of humanity's stupidity because you can point it out to us and make generalizations based on the evidence.

Hmm.. You've really thought this through, huh buddy? So you're saying you don't know any ignorant or careless people? Acting like I've shat in your face with every post I make really doesn't help, either. I said millions could be swayed, there are 6 billion people on the planet, this makes no serious dent. And maybe I am just making a sweeping generalization, but this sort of thing is what I've observed, at least in my community: Ignorance and apathy. Take a good look at cuba, my friend. Castro, Hitler. Name any good dictator and this is what they've done. They pulled it off. Bad situations can arrise anywhere, and many people are prone to invest faith in the alien rather than take responsibility.

Just like you, as I have observed, are prone to leaping to conclusions. I honestly believe people don't understand simply because they don't want to.

Edit: @khmp: I actually didn't reveal much more than what was implied, (ie monsters, mist) I didn't reveal the ending even, lol. Sorry if you still hate me for that.

Just like you, as I have observed, are prone to leaping to conclusions.

The only conclusion I have arrived at is that I severely dislike your tone. I haven't addressed the rest of your post (which, by the way, I have read,) because it's not worth addressing -- you've made your opinion quite clear, stated in clear factual terms right there among the real facts, and then asked us all to agree with you.

Case in point:

Millions of minds could be swayed to do...whatever. Let's face it, society is deluded and apathetic.
