The Silver Lining [3D KQ Fan Sequel] Released!

UPDATE:Check it out, they released the first episode: http://www.postudios.com/blog/?p=446

Hey, don't know if any of you remember, but about 8 years ago, some fans of the original King's Quests series by Sierra started making a 3D remake of the series. Then about 3 years later, in 2005, Vivendi ordered a Cease and Desist. A little while later, the team negotiated a non-commercial fan license and were permitted to continue development. 5 years later, in 2010, the Activision ends up with the King's Quest IP and order another C&D. Now, a few months later after more negotiations, they've been permitted to continue development again.

To make it all even cooler, the team announced they were releasing the first episode (Which I assume is the remake of King's Quest I) is being released July 10th (Tomorrow :D)

Check out the story here http://news.filefront.com/kings-quest-f ... ext-month/

and at the team's own blog here http://www.postudios.com/blog/?p=69

Anyone else looking forward to this? I had completely forgot about this until a couple days ago, so I didn't even know about their second legal battle. I just checked on it now, and saw about the C&D and was like "dang" and then I kept reading so my disappointment didn't last long :D

Oh, after looking more closely, it's not a remake. It's actually a continuation on the story, so it'll be more of a fan game than a fan remake. From what I've seen the production values are staggering for a fan game, although you'd probably expect that after 8 years XD

:O!
Now this is some grade A gamenews here, gj gj
King's Quest I was my first computer game, my first adventure game, and the series is tied with Leisure Suit Larry (also an early Sierra/Williams production) as my favorite adventure series of all time.

I went and replayed 1-6 recently (I never liked 7). The earliest games are confounded in difficulty just to figure out what verbiage to use, and are incredibly unforgiving (it's nearly impossible not to die 100x unless you've already done it before ... And in most of them it's possible to do an action that causes a dead-end which is impossible to break without serious reload-backtracking) (but it's totally worth it most of the time to see the failure screens and death animations). But ffff I still love them dearly. LSL had more comedy, but KQ was able to play on childhood stories in an endearing and amusing way unlike most games I've ever seen.

Heh starting out in the castle in KQ1 and then instantly walking into the moat and being eaten by the 8-bit sea serpent is one of my endearing memories. All you had to do was assume Graham would automatically stop at the water's edge. That was most of the humor, subtly preying on your presumptions!

Here's hoping they don't royally fuck it up!!! There was an enormous amount of art production and music production (albeit, 16 or 32 bit) that went into these games and they can't skimp on quality to have the fans regard it as a true sequel. Here's also hoping they don't try to go the raunch or slapstick route because KQ's humor was never about that.

Did you ever see the KQ remakes I'd posted in this forum a while back? They're surprisingly good, if not perfect, but they were made by only a small handful of devoted people.

Are you talking about the AGDInteractive remakes? I don't remember if I saw them when you put them up, but yeah, I've played them, but unfortunately only a little bit. Those games require you to devote quite some time, because you've got to like take notes about what works and what doesn't and stuff. They're awesome when you have the time. And yeah, King's Quest I was one of the first games I played, though I don't think it was the first. They were awesome, because my entire family would be each playing their own separate games on KQI and we'd have to keep helping each other out.

KQ is one of the few Sierra style point and click adventures that I actually liked, so I am hoping I'll like TSL as well. I don't think you need to be worried about them botching this one, at least from a standpoint of production quality. The story itself I guess could be horrible, but it looks like the graphics and music and choreography are really incredible for a fan-made game. They definitely are commercial quality graphics. You can see a trailer for it here: http://www.tsl-game.com/

Yeah those.
The voiceovers were deplorable but if you didn't download the voice pack the games were impressively good. And actually a lot easier than the originals because you could point and click instead of use the text command prompts of the first 4. KQ5 was the first to officially use P&C controls.

(btw KQ1 was my first PC game. My first video game was Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers for the NES )

I'm leery about the 3D-looking aesthetics they went with but they are still pretty damn slick either way. 3D KQ reminds me too much Mask of Eternity ... Which I don't even really consider as part of the series because most of the elements tying the series together were abandoned for it.

Well, it's not 3D looking, the game is in full 3D. I'm not exactly sure what that will entail. It would be interesting if it was in first person. A lot of King's Quest was exploring, and I think exploring is more immersive in first person.

Oh yeah, the first game that was mine and not the family's was Mech Warrior II: Titanium Edition which, sorry, kicks the crap out of KQ :D

downloading now!
ah crap they put in voiceovers. shit i hope it's not as balls as all the other ones that have ever been done for the series. with the remakes and sierra re-releases i had to mute the game it was so bad :/

Haha, I played it a little bit. The voiceovers could be worse, but they're not great. The flavor text (Or I guess flavor voice) is still as funny as ever XD
