The Restaurant Thread

Restaurant Thread

At least all of us have been to some sort of restaurant at one point our our lives. Whether its a good restaurant, a generic chain restaurant, or an exotic restaurant, we all have a memory or two, whether good or bad. So I am asking you:

Some ideas

  • What is the best restaurant you have been to?
  • What is the worst restaurant you have been to?
  • What is the most exotic food you have had at a restaurant?
  • What is the best/worst memory you have had at a restaurant?
  • What is the worst/best food you have had at a restaurant?
  • Do you enjoy going to restaurant? How often do you go?
  • Do you have any odd/funny stories involving an experience at a restauraunt?

Restaurants include anything from fast food, to expensive, high-class restaurants.
Just talk about something involving a time at a restaurant or a restaurant in general. You can strive off the list. Please do, as my list isnt superb. :3

* What is the best restaurant you have been to?

I would have to say the Rain Forest Cafe in Seattle Washington. It had a bunch of robot animals and it actually rained while you tried to eat. It also had fish that swam through the walls and other interesting things. I got kicked out because I was messing with the robot Gorilla.

* What is the worst restaurant you have been to?

This really yucky Mexican restaurant. They burnt the nacho chips, I mean come on! Plus there was this whiny kid behind me begging his mom for desert.

* What is the most exotic food you have had at a restaurant?

To be honest, I would have to say kung pow chicken. :haha: I don't really go for exotic things.

* What is the best/worst memory you have had at a restaurant?

Best: Climbing the robot Gorilla!!!
Worst: Being pulled off said Gorilla by the mall security. I landed on my head.

* What is the worst/best food you have had at a restaurant?

Best: A Hamburger made by my girlfriends dad at the restaurant where he used to work.
Worst: Those burnt nacho chips. They even burnt the cheese!

* Do you enjoy going to restaurant? How often do you go?
It's about 50/50. I go when I can or if I want to take my girlfriend out on a date.

* Do you have any odd/funny stories involving an experience at a restauraunt?

When I was working at a taco bell, one of my co-workers actually came ( :fap: ) in the beans. :barf: since I wasn't there, they continued to watch the customers eat the tainted beans without saying anything. When I got there I learned about this and immediately threw away the beans. Everybody got in trouble, including me, and I didn't even do anything!

* What is the best restaurant you have been to?
That would have to be the Orange County Mining Company. There's only one, and it's on the top of a hill, on a very, very expensive piece of land. The food is delicious, and the building, utensils, glasses and dishes all follow the them. (The glasses were actually large jars of various sizes) Also, the service was exceptional. If I had ever eaten at Orange Hill, I would say that, but I haven't. (They are on a nearby, taller hill, which they own the entirety of. Their food is reputed as some of the best in southern California, outside of the highest of the high end locations in LA and potentially San Diego. And their service is just as good, if not better)

* What is the worst restaurant you have been to?
I don't remember the name, or the theme. All I remember is that they somehow burned my egg. My boiled egg. Not only was it burned, but the yoke was alternately drippy and crunchy, despite being in the center.

* What is the most exotic food you have had at a restaurant?
Not much in the way of exotic food. Probably some Hawaiian Mahi Mahi (also known as a dorado, I think) that was being served around here a few summers ago when fisherman started catching it off the California coast, despite the fact that it is a tropical fish, and the coastal waters around here are generally very cold.

* What is the best/worst memory you have had at a restaurant?
Best: Not sure. Possibly one of my birthday parties at BJ's Brewery (Despite the name, it isn't a pub or bar, but an actual Chicago-style pizza place that has a chain in Southern California)
Worst: The boiled egg they burned. I mean, honestly. How the fuck did they burn an egg while they boiled it?

* What is the worst/best food you have had at a restaurant?
Best: If it counts, the food my dad brought home from Orange Hill. If it doesn't, probably the barbecued ribs from Lucille's Barbecue.
Worst: That fucking burned boiled egg.

* Do you enjoy going to restaurant? How often do you go?
I enjoy going, but I also don't have much in the way of opportunities.

* Do you have any odd/funny stories involving an experience at a restauraunt?
Chocolate makes me sneeze. Every time I have chocolate, I sneeze once or twice. Once, at a Rainforest Cafe at Disneyland, we ordered chocolate cake for dessert. I sneezed, and tried to direct it at my shoulder. Instead, I ended up spewing cake bits all over the giant fishtank next to me. Oh, and one of the fish in that tank was circling around the tank and passing me. All night. It always followed the same path, too. I stopped counting at around 50 passes.

So I'm just kind of going to ignore those questions and launch into a multi-branched non-cohesive story.

So I'm in Kyoto, right? There's this major shopping/tourist district down town, centralized around Shijou (literally "Fourth Avenue"). I have class down around there every Wednesday (and Sunday mornings when my teacher has to cancel class...), so it's really convenient just to get foodles afterward.

My haunts are usually one of two restaurants: Sukiya and Nakau. At Sukiya, you only need to be able to read basic Japanese, because you process your order in a machine! You put in money, decide what you want, and press a button. It prints a ticket with your order, which you then give to the waiter. The food there's RIDICULOUS amounts of cheap.

I usually get Oyakodon, which is an awesome foodstuff - its name means "Parent and Child Rice Bowl" So what's in this bowl of family love? Chicken and egg! XD And if you go up north to Hokkaido, apparently Oyakodon refers to salmon and salmon eggs ;D

At Nakau you actually have to order from a real live person....but they have an English menu! :D It's not as cheap as Sukiya, but it's also a little bit better in terms of quality. But they don't have oyakodon. :( Last time I went (yesterday, actually :D) I got onion beef bowl with egg - thinly sliced beef, mixed with spring onion, all on top of rice. They bring it to you with an egg - you crack it open, separate the yolk, and stick it on top of the beef. MAJOR AMOUNTS OF DELICIOUS. :girl:

A place called Fleur de Lys in Las Vegas, the Mandalay Bay hotel. Owned by chef Hubert Keller.
The ambience is beautiful, the staff is decked in tuxedos. There are two stories, one of which has an eat-in wine rack room. You're served sparkling water on the rocks and a 50+ page compliment of spirits. It's 4 star fare, you can't get out of there under $200, but god every bite of the food is fucking amazing. They also serve genuine Kobe beef there. You can get the tour of the kitchen and meet the chef, too, when you order the Signature Tasting Menu (where you typically get 5-8 small meals tailored specifically for you, based on your likes and dislikes). They also serve a $5000 burger--but I have never tried that ;o

A Waffle House up in Pensacola FL. Went there during a road trip. I was tired and famished. I ordered a Belgian Waffle. They took 20 minutes getting it to me because the cook was sitting there talking on his cell phone. The waffle was ok--still rather cold in the middle, but I was starving-- but they failed to give me a fork. After asking for one twice and waiting another ten minutes, I had to search out an open table and gank its silverware. The whole time I never got my orange juice I ordered and just had to drink water. They tried to charge me for the OJ and I had to argue with them and show them the glass which still had water in it to prove I never got any OJ. Then when I didn't leave a tip, the girl scoffed and rolled her eyes at me. Ugh

I have had so much exotic food, it's hard to say. If it's raw, I'll eat it. If it's spicy, I'll eat it. If it has a name I can't pronounce, I'm all over it. I'll eat anything that doesn't have eyes looking up at me. I once had a dessert made out of avocados and guinea fowl eggs (it was amazingly good). I've had a plate of assorted foie gras paired with cheese from around the world. I've had smoked Capybara (a giant rodent which is farmed like cattle in Venezuela) (it wasn't great). I've had crawdad and prairie dog gumbo in Lousiana (it was pretty damn good). I've had almost anything a Japanese menu can whip up, from Sea Urchin (bleh) to seaweed wrapped roe (yum). I've even eaten it off a naked woman once (a dining party I'll never forget >.>). God, I love food.

Best? When I went to Caracas, into a tiny little straw/adobe hut without electricity, which served the best Mexican food I've ever had. I was also serenaded by locals on guitar and weaseled out of ten bucks American because I ran out of pesos. They kept it lit at night with torches and by stringing a ton of christmas lights in from a neighbor with electricity. It was an amazing, eclectic experience, and I think about it sometimes still.

Worst? A visit to Olive Garden where my ex-boyfriend told me it was over and that he was totally cheating on me :/. Also the food was so-so.

Best? Kobe Beef at this Japanese steak house that no longer exists in California. It was like eating beef-flavored butter ;o;

Worst? When my coworker and I went to a place for lunch in downtown Tampa and we both ordered burgers, but hers came back with a gigantic cockroach cooked into it, and I had already eaten most of mine. :X (that's what I get for wolfing down food). The burger sucked but the possibility of it being roach-infested was ... disheartening, to say the least.

I LOVE it. But I never get to go anymore. I don't have any money. I'd go all the time if I could, to try new and exotic anything.

I was at a steakhouse, just finishing up the meal, which was decent, and a bunch of paramedics and firefighters ran in, and made a bee-line into another dining room. I'd smelled smoke the whole time but I figured it was just the smell of cooking. Apparently the kitchen was on fire :x. Someone had to be treated for smoke inhalation or something. The place was evacuated, and I didn't feel like waiting around, so I left without having to pay the bill. Heh heh.

Awesome Bro

I just ate at the Olive Garden. Say what you want about that place, it doesn't matter. It has delicious food. I fucking hate spinach, yet their Chicken and Gnocchi soup made me like it somehow.

The best restaurant I've ever been is probably the Cafe Bellagio, in Las Vegas. I had a great, low sauerkraut Reuben there, and it was cooked to perfection. My grandparents drove to Vegas from Arizona, and we also ate at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville.

The room service food was great as well, though. Fuck, it was all good.

You know, something I noticed that a lot of restaurants don't serve is a Monte Cristo sandwich. There's been only one place I've been to in my life that serves it, and it's a cheap racing bar here in Minnesota. There wasn't even a place that I went to in Vegas that served it.

LOL. Funny childhood story here.

When I was like, 4, maybe, my mom, grandma and grandpa and I went out to some generic family restaurant. The name was never there for me. We were sitting there waiting for our order when I saw this strange bug crawling by my grandmas shoulder, behind her on the booth.

I yelled, all excited: "Look gramma! A GIANT ANT!"
She turned around and then lurched out of her seat. "We're leaving right NOW!"
We all followed in tow, me whining and complaining how hungry I was. I found out that the "Giant Ant" was a cockroach.
