The FL Studio thread

55.jpg

Fl Studio, previously and more commonly known as Fruityloops, is a sequence-based sound editing program.
It is known for its steep learning curve, and for the people who write shitty techno tunes with it.
The program uses a piano roll for the melody composition, so there's no need for any musical notition knowledge if you want to use it.

This topic is for all those people who would like to use FL Studio, but are having trouble with using it.
I have FL Studio 9 myself, and have been using 8 for a while. I won't call myself an expert on the program, but if you want to know how the basics work, I could give you some tips and pointers :3

I'll probably do some small tutorials in a while, so the most obvious things will be covered.

so fire away!

On a side note: ill be in #music on the slacked irc network, so you can ask there too

man im am proud to say that i totally suck at fl :(

i want to use it to make some mad ambient shit though. it has full vst support? I might go ahead and buy it or demo it to learn the ropes.

what kind of default sounds does fl 9 have?

It has full vst support, as well as Dxi. All the functions in the vst's, like reverb and warmth etc. (if your plugin supports them) can be adjusted in the sequencer too.

I myself use the XXL version of 9, so there's a shitload of default sounds, from instrument samples to (a) soundfont(s), to various pads, sound effects, choirs, voice samples, and a shitload of electronic oscillator samples, which are fully tweakable (check it out here). You can add your own samples too.. which, if they are in .wav format, will be able to pitch automatically when piano roll'd.

I wouldn't know about the other versions though. They're saved as .wav files, so if other versions have less sounds, (which might be the case) I could upload them for you.

good thing it has dxi too  I assumed it did, since cubase goes along the same way.

is there a score editor? Thats one reason i liked cubase so much.
