The Dark Knight

I'm working on an intro song for someone and was looking for critique's comments.

This is what the person told me they wanted the song to be like...

"Song starts off in a calm stage then suspends builds up as a dark knight aproches a hill all of a sudent it breaks out into orchastral music as the battle begins for control of the planet then it goes calm again when the gods decend from the heavens and then once again it picks up as a even stronger battle begins between the gods and the dark knight"

So that's what I had to go on, and this is what I created.

Dark Knight

One thing, what do you think of the soundfonts/vsti used in this song? I own eastwest Silver edition but I'm far far away from my computer that has it on it, so i had to scavenge around for the best free soundfonts and VSTi's i could find... There nothing compared to silver, but they at least let you know what it should sound like.

it feels fractured to me, like it doesnt flow, the different pieces dont flow into one another very well. it sounds like a demo of 5-6 songs pasted together to me, the calm intro needs the cymbals and percussion, toned down because they kind of clash with the general calm of that section.

pretty much in general it sounds very rough and i think it needs some work making it fit together better

as far as your vsti choice, i actualy like it, its very midi sounding, pretty much matches up with the rtp music, so if the person youre writing it for is going to be using the rtp music as well i wouldnt change those

Sounds quite FF6ish for some reason. A little fractured like Gulch said, it sounds like a bunch of completely different songs put together. Otherwise it sounds nice so good job on that.

Hey, thanks for the quick replies, I appreciate it! I definitely think you're right about the percussion. The cymbals weren't the right choice, especially for the beginning and slow section in the middle.

I can also see how it sounds fractured to you guys. In my vision, this song has 4 sections.

1. The slow introduction and build.
2. Battle number one.
3. Another slow section with the gods descending.
4. A final battle in which the Dark Knight defeats the gods (bad defeats good).

I'd like some more input on this, but isn't it ok to have a few different sounding sections here? The don't all need to sound the same. They definitely need some sort of flow and continuity throughout the song. The way I see it is that numbers 2 and 4 have that continuity. Number 3 is a completely different mood and "story" so I've created that with different chord progressions and melodies, but ones that should still flow with the rest of the song...

I think it would help to know a little more on why it doesn't sound like it flows to you. Is it to abrupt? The different instruments used in different sections? etc...

Thanks again for the comments!

The violin at the beginning, the trumpet, and the drums sound very synthy. I would say look for another sf2. The composition isn't bad. As others above have said, the changes between styles are pretty jarring. Once inside them, though, most of what I hear is good. You might want to think about layering some chords in the background at certain spots, to give it a more full sound. Nothing too dramatic, just something to tie it all together.
