The big Super Mario Bros 2 SCAM

I know this really isnt that important, and a lot of you probably allready knew about it, but I felt it deserved a topic. and since nobody made one allready, I thought I would. For those of you who didn't allready know about this, however, brace yourself.

Super Mario Bros. 2. We all know this game. The one super mario bros game that just didn't work with the rest of the series. The enemies wern't the same, you couldnt fight them the same, barely any elements of the game were the same. You know why that is? Because that game.....

Is not super mario bros 2! Thats right, that game is a lie. The real super mario bros 2 didnt MAKE it here on the NES! They thought it was too challenging for american players. Plently of you mario fans have most likely played this game though. You know the SNES game Super Mario All Stars? You know that wierd game on it, Super Mario Bros. the Lost Levels? Thats the realy super mario bros 2. The physics are the same, the graphics are the same, the music is the same, they even designed the levels the same! Go play it and have fun.

So now your probably wondering, "That still doesnt explain how wierd Super Mario Bros 2 was!" but hold on, Im getting to that. When they decided not to give us the good super mario bros. 2, the didnt put any effort into making us a new one, so what they do?

They changed the sprites in a crappy japanese game and called it a day.

Hmm, I spot a couple similrities......

The game to the right is our Super Mario Bros 2, and the game to the right is Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. The games are close to identical. There are some small graphical edits, the sound effects are changed, but thats it.

Comments?

@Doppels: There are a fair amount of people whod on't know about that actually. None of my 3 friends whi I told knew about it.

@Pete2DS: I'm sorry I said it was crappy D=

I thought that this was well known knowledge honestly O_o
Yes, Dopples ... Well known knowledge. The game is called Yume Kōjō and I was like 6 when it came out :|

I thought it was called Doki Doki Panic!

Regardless, Super Mario Bros 2 added some of the most well known Mario characters, such as Shy Guy and Birdo.

I didn't know until SNES came out, but I didn't really care either way. I liked it. I liked 1 and 3 better, but me and my sister still had fun playing it way the hell back when.

It's like Sega's old mascot before Sonic... what was his name...? Alex Kidd? Something like that. Two or three of his games were modified versions of other games.

Yeah, I was pretty sure this was fairly common knowledge. Didn't Nintendo make a note about this in the manual for the GBA edition?

Anyways, on this note, why the fuck doesn't Nintendo make games like All-Stars anymore? Not only did it REMAKE four of their best platformer games with SUPER IMPROVED graphics, sound effects, music, and a (much needed) save system but it packaged it all in one single game which was released WITH the SNES itself. I still remember back in 1992 when the commercials for the super pack came on and it was kind of like a game show where this Alec Trebec guy was like "SUPER MARIO ALL-STARS AND SUPER MARIO WORLD NOW RELEASED WITH THE SUPER NINTENDO BUY THEM NOW!!!"

Fuck, I remember when Nintendo was KING of advertising. The Yoshi's Island commercial featured this fat guy who ate so much he exploded and it was so gross they had to edit it for television. Dr. Mario featured this witch doctor who maliciously shrunk people's heads. Kirby's Dreamland had kirby sucking up this arnold schwarzenneger looking guy and spitting him out into a blob. Their viral marketing campaign with Star Fox 64 contained a vhs tape that had two men, a balding guy with a Sony shirt and a fat guy with a Sega shirt, torturing a mario doll while these two nintendo scientists harped on about how revolutionary star fox was. They even released 2 other tapes for Diddy Kong Racing and Pokemon. They even mailed out free Mario and Zelda comic books to Nintendo Power subscribers, gave away free strategy guides (I still have my ORIGINAL Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III/VI strategy guide), AND Earthbound was released with a strategy guide and a scratch n sniff contest thingy.

Fuck man, Nintendo used to be king. I hardly consider them worth anything nowadays.

I thought every gamer knew this. :/

Yep, apparently Nintendo of American looked at the real Super Mario Bros. 2 and thought "Hey! This is no different from the first and it stinks!", so they hacked Doki Doki Panic and changed the graphics. Also, in Japan the American Super Mario Bros. is called "Super Mario USA", just in case anyone didn't know.

I thought we already covered the fact that the official reason SMB2 didn't come out in the states (it WAS released in Japan) was because it would kick our asses (it was hard...)

But yeah, I'm pretty sure I learned about this like 12 years ago.

Does nothing to change the fact that it's one of my favorite mario games.

Hang on a second, pretty sure I can remember the sites name.

Whoops...

There you go, the site is older than the internet, but there's some pretty interesting information.

hehehe...

When I was like eight or something, I played Super Mario Bros Deluxe for the game boy color, and I was able to get a high enough score it unlocked the SMB2: lost levels for the game. I nearly beat it, until I got permanently stuck on level 7-2 and I lost the cartridge.

Still, even after all these years, I remember how hard it was. If nintendo was to make a game with combined levels from SMB, SMB2:LL, SMB3, SMW, and NSMB, into one giant huge overworld map, and had incredible graphics and sound, it would sell so well. May never happen, but if it did, the game would take a few days to fully beat, if ever.

If you have never played the lost levels and are a huge fan of Mario, do so. and if you can beat the lost levels without dieing, you're cheating. I played the game for a whole month and only got to level 7-2, just to show how hard it is. (I dont think there is warp pipes...)

Nintendo deemed lost levels "too hard" for American gamers. Hell, it was too hard for Japanese gamers. It featured poison mushrooms (seemingly harmless powerup mushrooms that actually kill you) and warp pipes that took you back levels. Honestly, they pulled a good move by keeping it away until later. If they sold it as an individual package, people would have felt ripped off and I'm sure Nintendo's sales would have hurt.
