The 5-Year Contest Visuals Improvement Thread

This thread is similar to the Mapping Improvement thread in Game Development Discussion, except instead of being solely reserved for maps, you can ask for advice on any visual elements of your game, including things such as title screens and UIs. It's also reserved solely for projects entered in the 5-Year contest.

Remember, we have a screenshot thread already, so if you post something here make sure it's because you want advice, not just to show off.

Suggestions? Anyone?

The waterfalls had a nice idea behind it but it looks awful if you can't make a custom graphic for it then resort to using the one on the left. the stump of a tree in the first map is teetering on the edge. that is definitely not proper shading where the guy is standing. Below where the guy is standing the cliff On the second map those path things have two dark of an outline. The shading of the corners of cliffs should be kept the same and the grass ramp does not end smoothly on the top.

Very good ideas Ares. But with your maps, I notice the flat plane effect. Everything seems to be on it's own height, and there's really no up/down hill effects. It's not incorrect to do it this way, but I think your maps will look a little better with the suggested changes:

I love the underpass thing, but it's just too short. You'd have to make a crawling sprite to make it believable. Another thing that bothers me is the tree stump, cleanly cut. If I were a logger, I definitely would not cut just that one tree, especially because of it's positioning on the hill. I recommend that you just put a normal pine tree there, like you did on the hill above it.

The huge cave opening used as a waterfall doesn't really please my eye. Mostly because the edges are too round. I think if you can edit in stalactites, and roughen up the edges of it a bit, it would work better. Also, the two holes at different heights, both pouring water is a bit confusing to me. The smaller hole I like the best, but I recommend you edit the hole opening to make it even smaller. Also include a few cracks on the walls, with rocks & debris on the ground, or in the water, below.

On this map I think you just need to play around with creating the illusion of going up and down hill. You should use different height walls, and move the poles a bit closer to the edge.

Overall, you did a good job. I think your maps are really creative. I would just suggest that you work on smoothing out the edges of the walls, to make them seem less square, and use some lighting effects.

edit:  I thought I was going to be first to post! Looks like twelvestarfish13 beat me to it

One of the major antagonists in DESU. He's called as the genocidal High Prelate, named Yathagra. Though he's a work-in-progress. He has this half-mask on his head, and strange shoulder armor. It implies that this alien can cast magic.

here's the Armored Character I'm working on at the moment, still some minor lighting and shading to work on but as far as the design goes, what do you guys think?

His shoulders, if made of metal, do not have enough contrast. But if you change the contrast on the shoulders, it would be a good idea to do the same with the mask. And I know it's a work in progress, but I hope you don't plan on leaving the jacket that one solid color
So I went ahead and put 3 palettes in there that I think might look good for his jacket.

Overall, I think your design is good. It definitely looks alien-like, and the gold does remind me of royalty, or in this case genocidal High Prelate! lol. Good job!

The design is very good. The only minor adjustments I would make, would be for you to work a bit on the arms of left and right facing sprites. On the left shoulder, it seems that you have a piston or something, but it's not there when he's facing left. Also, I would make his arm a bit longer on the right facing sprites, as it is on the front and back facing sprites.

But very good job! I like it

My attempt to make fighting poses for my template. So far, it's trying to simply punch. Still, it's a work in progress needed for both NetGame Crisis Saga and DESU! (Dangerous Extraterrestrial Suppression Union)

I have doubts on the 2nd to the last frame though...

For quick things, such as attacks, you don't necessarily need to utilize all 4 frames, this one could be done with just three frames, but I put the fourth frame as a copy of the second. And this is what yours would look like.

This looks too stationary, and doesn't look much like he's projecting the punch.

I modified it slightly by; bending the spine, moving the head forward and down, changing the facial expression, and by moving the entire arm forward.
And this is what it looks like.

Eh? The over-contrasted blacks were accidentally discovered and executed. On the yellows, it's not really yellow! It was supposed to be gold, as in those aliens are gold-armored.

the yellows seem a little low on contrast as well. with the exception of the first guy's shoulderpads and segments of the second guy's helmet, all the yellow pieces look exceptionally flat.
