Tehrin's Resources

Welcome to Tehrin's Resource thread! I hope that I'll have a good deal of stuff to offer here. Right now, all I have in progress is a tileset (which happens to be quite a large project)

This is a large undertaking. I'm working on a modern city tileset, since I can't seem to find anything that really has what I want in HK size. Please keep in mind that this is my first attempt making a tileset. So there are a lot of things that I'm not all that aware of yet.

This is BUGGY, and therefore not ready for release/usage in other people's games! At the moment, I'm just seeking critique and suggestions on what I should put in here.

Venetia, for her lovely brick tiles.
Tana for the HK template which is used for the mannequins in the windows.

Um, My major issue right now is that I'm not fond of the sides of these buildings here. So if anyone has suggestions on how to make the sides look a little more 3-D instead of flat, that would be great.

I would say that you have a unique way of shading and colouring. Really, making the walls and the roof? have some "lines" on them. I also love the texture of the brick as it looks realistic. Hm...but as RTP supporter, I would say that the tileset MAYBE didn't match with the RTP sprites. Anyway, great job and keep it up.

Don't like them much. They really don't have the feel of being pixeled, and look more like they were made with a few clicks of photoshop's gradient tool. Whether it's the case or not, that's how it looks/feels at first glance, and it wouldn't fit well with sprites and other things.

The walls look more like they'd be interior walls than exterior walls. That's one of the bigger reasons too that it doesn't look right. And you don't need the horizontal gradient on the sides. Walls don't curve like a gradient would imply. It looks out of place.

The best part and the bricks at the bottom of some of the walls, the worst part are the windows.

I have to agree with Solid Bro. The walls and windows seem too gradient. The shading on the whole thing just looks odd, but I guess that's because of the gradient.

I do like the other tiles, though, simply because the shading is good there. I suggest reshading the walls and window, just to make them seem less out of place.

I'm working on editing this. I took out the wall tiles and I made them more pixeled looking. As soon as I get some stuff worked out with it, I'll post some screenshots.

Impreza: I'm making this specifically for HK sized sprites, because that's what I want to use in my game as opposed to RTP sized ones. But I'm thinking about making some doors and windows that will fit smaller sprites too.

Solid Bro: I took the gradients out of the new version I'm working on. The reason I'd put them there in the first place, at least on the 2nd rows, is because I was trying to fiddle with making the building that comes out more in the front pop out a bit more. But it didn't look right in the end. :P So those are gone.

I went back to my windows and made them more pixeled. Also, I was going for a rough concrete kind of texture on the walls. But I suppose it could also be used for interiors as carpeted walls? XD It looks a little better now though.

lol. okay here's a screenie. D< It still needs a tooooon more work. I want to some different walls. But at least it's looking more pixelated? My awnings don't look too pixelated though. I need to redo those. Oh and ignore the light bottoms on the windows on the 2nd story there. I put the "lights on" one on there, when the lights were off on the others.

Oh, and I'm using Venetia's bricks for the moment. I need to make my own.

The awnings look good. The rest looks too...grainy? Tone it down a bit on the dithering.

I really like the bricks and the detail inside the windows is cute. ^_^

The bricks aren't mine. :P I just stuck them in there for the moment. I'll see what I can do to take down the grainyness.

This is really coming along, and kudos for using HK's! I like your idea of putting things on the insides of the buildings you can see through the windows. Don't change the awnings--they're the best, IMO.

This may just be a mapping malfunction but don't shade darker near the splits in the multi-story buildings. It looks like the building curves outward every level. You see what I mean? Like, it's dark, then it lightens, then it darkens again. Gradient-ish. It should only darken towards the bottom of the first level--remember that the sun comes from above! ;')

Oh and I'm not sure what's up with those really enormous windows but I see some sort of tiling. Not sure if you were going for glass blocks or something, but it just looks like the window has perfectly-spaced, square-shaped scratches in it.

Yep, that's mapping. lol. I'll go ahead and take that darker layer off the top too. I'm still a bit of a newb when it comes to these things. XD So pointers are greatly appreciated.

Oh, the glass... those are large transparent windows. I just stuck some square tiles behind it on the first layer for the time being. But I'm making some tiles that are specifically supposed to go behind the glass with posters, mannequins and what not behind it. That'll look a lot better once I finish those.

Thanks a lot for the tips!

It's looking good! My main suggestion would be to add cracks, and grunge to the walkways. They look too perfect.

Also, a gutter on the street would really give it a more 3D feel.

I'm thinking that the vertical lines on the sidewalk is making everything look really flat and odd. I wonder if removing those lines would help some?

I don't think you should remove the lines...then it would look like one long strip of color... I rather like the lines...it just looks too 'neat'.

How developed is the city?

(regardless it would still have some 'life wear and tear' from people walking on it all day.)

Wow, everybody is starting to make great HK tilesets now. Will you be releasing this for public use? BTW, I think the city looks more "authentic" now that you added cracks to the sidewalks and walls. Keep up the good work.
