Syntax help

In sephiroth's party switcher there's a syntax explanaition that i cannot understand, can any1 help me out with an example?

i want character 1 to be required in party and ive tried but i cant get it to work, i just dont understand how to make it properly

Try this:

$scene = Scene_Party.new({'clear' => true, 'required' => [1], 'restricted' => [], 'allow_globals' => false, 'minsize' => 1, 'maxsize' => 10000000})

Change evrything to the way you want it except 'required' => [1].

It still doesnt work, i just want to know the correct syntax to get character 1 to be required in the party
