Sunny Forest/Woods Mapping

Member

well here I am.

and here we go.

If you didn't rad the title, this will teach you how to make a half decent map for the Woods/Sunny Forest (Depending on which RPGXP you have)

I guess We'll start...
now.
NOW!
...

Let's go

Well... We start with a big space of only grass this is our canvas...

Next... An optional part... we can either
1: Make amore natural, less developed area OR
2: Make a hiking trail.

I have decided to make an ara that is more natural...
So for this step Ive decided to just randomly place dirt using the elipse button. (First Layer)
It will look a-something like this...

Nextly, we will add a little stream for some color...

This will add some flavor to the map.

For even more spice, we will add patches of grass.
I'm going to admit. this is a real pain in the neck unless you have an autotile.

finall... we make it look forest-y...
We throw som trees on the map.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/mashjka1/WoodsTut-4.png[/IMG]
But wait! Whats that? half the trunk is missing!

so we se layers to or advantage...
go to layer two and fix like so.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/mashjka1/WoodsTut-5.png[/IMG]

now that that's over with, lets put the icing on the cake.
We'll put some flowers and a bridge on the third layer...
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/mashjka1/WoodsTut-6.png[/IMG]

and that's all! Let's see the finished product in-game.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/mashjka1/WoodsTut-7.png[/IMG]

notice the fog, and scren color tone changes, these make a map way more realistic, because in a forest it's not as bright as a desert...

Well... that's all for now... Maybe more later if this is popular enough.. ^_^

Mmmh.. That is a boring forest.
Make the trees more dense etc. and its still easy to make the thick grass without the autotile, you're just lazy :)

The fog you've chosen is a terrible fog, and should never have existed. In addition, you have trees growing out of sand... I realize there IS life in the desert, but it rarely grows right out of sand. I also believe there are different flowers, rocks, pebbles, leaves, etc. on that tileset you could use to make the ground more interesting.

Due to the amount of grass on the second layer, you've limited your ability to layer trees and flowers, which is making the map boring.

It's great that your up for providing to the community but this isn't a very good tutorial. Based on your final map I think you could do with a tutorial yourself and am a little suprised that this tutorial got approved. Imagine if everyone provided a below par tutorial on mapping, the tutorial section would be a mess.

Prexus was right about the fog. It suggests that there are trees far higher than the perspective og the map blocking the sunlight. Your forest isn't even tense let alone tall. The only time I could see that fog being useful is in a jam-packed rainforest using a diffrerent tree sprite.

@Everyone: okay... god. It took me ten minutes for the entire tutorial.
If you want me to make a more impressive map, I will.

@Kururu... Um. Sure. Some people do. I just used an empty script demo
to mak the map, and it all he PK Names for everything. Since all my .proj files have the normal names, I figured I'd put in both in order not to confuse anyone.

@Everyone Aain. *MARS IS NOW MAKING A BETTER ONE. GIVE ME TEN MINUTES AND I'LL ADD IN AN EDIT.*

Edit: @Everyone Here we are.. I used the same map, but changed it... a lot... O_o. Anyways.
I'm chaniging it to "Forest Clearing"

The trees are more dense where heyshould be, and I scrapped the grass. Please criticize. I only did this to see how bad I actually was, so I could ge better. (NOT SARCASM.)

@BruntoTR I'll see what i can do about a spooky forest...

@BrunoTR And here we are... ell me whatha think. If yo like it I'll show all the layers...

It's a bit better but still a million miles away from being good enoughto base a tutorial on. The tutorial itself isn't really too helpful either. It basically just says put A down, put B down... etc.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your tutnew-1.jpg map has some issues in the upper left quadrant. There's some glitching with trees not matching up in the canopy.

I'm sorry if it sounds like people are ganging up on you, but if you write a tutorial about mapping, then it needs to be a top-quality map. Something you tossed together in ten minutes without a real goal in mind, or trying to convey a lesson, isn't helpful to the community, and tends to enforce the idea that a thrown-together map is good quality for a game.

Yeah....

But you can still sneak up in between the trees. Look where I've put the red arrows.

And I don't want to change the tileset so that the shade is just an 'x', because I still want normal tress dotted around.

I might just splice it with the forest tileset. There's a trick with that you can do to make dense, impassable trees.

And the tree in the bottom left hand corner. :x

Um, for your first forest in the tutorial, I would recommend not using those giant patches of tall grass, but make more numerous, smaller patches of tall grass throughout the map. And try layering the one tile grass patches above and below the multiple-tile patches to add variation.
Also work on your tree layering and make a few more in the areas where you do not want the player to walk.
Time is the key essence, you'll get better. Then release all the tutorials you want. :D

Byes.

Bruno it was harsh, You know a lot of people start off with NO mapping experience and blow chunks at it. I'm sure there are people who had use from this, and that guy shows promise in his own skills, the maps might lack a lot of content and key elements to make it "good" but it isn't horrible.

you really need to use ur imagination a little bit more, I can make a better forest than that in my dreams, do u neva wonder why God gave u an imagination, make it a bit more impressive, come on
