Stupid question - cutscenes

Well, maybe you could post a link for me to ONE of them because I did a search for cutscenes as well as looked through the whole tutorial forum and did not find a post on the basics of making a cutscene (I suppose I could use sony vegas to make an avi or something but I have a feeling that ISN'T the right way to do it.... lol)

I did find a post on how to get a widescreen effect in a cutscene..... that doesn't help though

oh just found this in the FAQ but it doesn't make much sense to me.... I need more details

Create an event, and set the Trigger to Auto Start. Within that event, move the other events, the hero, show messages, or do whatever else you want to do for the cut scene. Now do a Local Switch Operation, and turn Local Switch A ON. Make a second page to the event, and have the Precondition be that Local Switch A is ON.

If you're creating an opening cut scene, and you don't want the hero to be visible, then go to the database, click on the System tab, and remove all heros from your starting party. Now create that Autostart event on the opening map, and add your starting party back in after the event is completed.

If you're creating a cut scene in which the hero should not be visible, but that is not an opening cut scene, you can either remove all members from your party, or set the lead character's graphic to blank before the cut scene begins.

I'll try it but..........

I'll explain it simply:

1. Create the map you want your cutscene to take place on
2. Create an event on that map, and set 'Trigger' to 'Parallel Process'.
3. In that event, set Character Graphic to None, and maybe create a 640x480 image of two black bars: one at the top and one at the bottom, and show that with 'Show Picture' - but really that's a bit advanced for first try.
4. Make your cutscene in the same event - move events, show messages, change screen tone colour - whatever you want.
5. Finally, finish your event off but setting the character graphic back to your main character, and erase picture (if you added the bars).

There. If there's something you don't understand, ask.

Fox's tips are really great but there is one thing I would like to add. Don't forget to play it through a few times. I have had to tinker over and over with cutscenes until I learned how to use switches properly and make them quickly. The biggest tip is just to not get frustrated. You can do a whole lot with this program and the more you make the more techniques you will learn and then if you are like me you will go back and redo your cutscenes to make previous ones better. :) Remember you can use animations, change the position of text boxes, move multiple characters at the same time, make them jump or dash and on and on. Just tinker with the program in a "test game" it seems daunting but it can be learned quite quickly! Good Luck!
