To me it sounds like yet another crushing blow on the independently run RM communities, centralising everything in what's probably a really good system, but ultimately destroying the idea of places like ourselves, unfortunately.

Where do we sit in this brave new world ~

In terms of the Steam Workshop, you should take a look at the comparisons between the Steam workshop and Skyrim Nexus. The eventual conclusion was that Nexus remained a major player because they got in on the game before the "official" channel managed to, and thus snagged a major piece of the pie.
