Spriting

You can also use other, better programmes such as photoshop etc. Photoshop is probably the one most commonly used.

I'd strongly disagree with photoshop being "better" than Paint just because it's more loaded with features. And I don't think it's more commonly used.

A lot of people use Graphics Gale as an "advanced" spriting program, but the only program you really need is Paint.

How about researching them for yourself?

There are lots of free programs out there, too. And for the record, Paint Shop Pro is better for pixelling than Photoshop. IMO. And it's cheaper.

afcourse the 50 year old car would be much better to drive to the corner shop :/

Can't you lazy people walk anymore these days?

The only reason I'm using photoshop to sprite is because it has layers, and layers are cool. But then again it's not a free program, so I'm lucky to have it, and probably paint can be good enough for your basic needs.

photoshop IS better, people only work with paint if they have no better program/are very good with paint.

It's better, true in a sort of way, but you don't actually read posts do you? The car metaphor was very explicit I'd say... Tell me, what spriting task besides recoloring can PS that Paint cannot do? The answer might surprise you... And I can get PS, but it's not the one program I need to sprite

And I'd never thought I'd say this, but very good job Despain, you're totally right. That post is pure win of spriter's pride and power. But I'd add that GIMP is helpful when you want to replace a head (or something else) and you don't feel like filling up the blanks... so... yes, Paint.

Still, a matter of preference but PS is still just too much

Photoshop:
A. it has layers
B. you can do more: step backward
C. it has transparency
D. easy recolour (hue)
E. better selection tools
F. you can choose the brush size
G. better magnifying

Paint:
A. It has a better paint bucket

Oh and you can do more things than only spriting with it afcourse

I use Photoshop Elements because I'm a cheap bastard, but I'd take it over Paint, even though it isn't free (it's pretty cheap though). I used to use something called Neopaint, which was great for the magnified box which would zoom in on the pixel you had the mouse over and the ones bordering it. Not so great otherwise.

With PS/PSE, you can also set gridlines and automatically space them out by 25% per line in both directions, which really helps to line sprite frames up properly. I don't think you can do that in Paint.

Luxury?

Uh, art is about the tools you use as well as the skill you have. You can use Tempura Paint because you can get a gallon for a dollar, but Acrylic will net you something nicer, and oil-based, even more. And the expensive oil paints are generally smoother and easier to use than the cheap stuff.

MS Paint takes forever to use, and just the fact alone that it doesn't have layers, or more than 3X undo, is enough to make any spriter want something faster/better.

Like I said before though, Paint Shop Pro is better suited for pixelling than Photoshop. But if you don't want to break the bank, go for Paint.NET--it's free, easy to use, and has a very handy palette-maker.

lol, I disagree that Paint has a better paint bucket. I draw my outlines on one layer, and then fill on the layer underneath (click "all layers").

Also as stated, I like using Photoshop's Blend modes. I use that quite a bit, even with spriting.

I used to use PSP a lot of pixels, but I don't even have a current version anymore, and I just stick with Photoshop for all my graphics right now.

But, people can still produce nice pixel work using Paint. Just like with any artistic medium, if you don't have skill, it doesn't matter how fancy your materials are, it's still not going to look good until you spend a lot of time practicing.

C. Doesn't Lag <------ you have a pentium I processor?

D. Pretty Easy Recolors <------ ermm, that's because recoloring IS simple, not because it's simple with paint
