Sotomayor, Racist.

I'm hating how so many democrats are just gushing their love for her. It's freakin' insane. She's shown so many crazy faces I don't know how these idiots keep falling for it. I'm a moderate who usually votes on the democrat side (75% or so) and I cannot believe that these people are actually considering accepting her into such an important place!

Reverse discrimination is her name. She's got a massive hate on for us white males. Now I know it just sounds funny when we white males complain about racism since we like never experience it but her whole history on the subject shows a highly bigoted woman with a vendetta against us.

She knocked out a fireman test just because only white people passed it. If they did better they deserve the jobs! We need to attack race issues not by knocking some races down to hoist some races up. That's just wrong.

She's made comments that as a Latina woman she'll be better at making decisions than a white man. That's insane too... It's just s different prospective from different experiences.

Accepting her would be a step backwards.

"Sotomayor was a member of a 2008 Second Circuit panel in the high-profile case Ricci v. DeStefano that upheld the right of the City of New Haven to throw out its test for firefighters and start over with a new test, because the City believed the test had a "disparate impact"[137] on minority firefighters. (No black firefighters qualified for promotion under the test, whereas some had qualified under tests used in previous years.) The City was concerned that minority firefighters might sue under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The City chose not to certify the test results and a lower court had previously upheld the City's right to do this. Several white firefighters and one Hispanic firefighter who had passed the test, including the lead plaintiff who has dyslexia and had put much extra effort into studying, sued the City of New Haven, claiming that their rights were violated. The case reached the Supreme Court and was overruled in a 5-4 decision that found the white firefighters had been victims of racial discrimination when they were denied promotion."

Sotomayor, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Now I would state that people are also attacking her for he saying that her experiences as a latina woman would influence her judgments and that's a stupid complaint since obviously all of us are influenced by our life, race, experiences, etc...

Also who you talking about, dude?

Sonia Sotomayor nominated for the US Supreme Court. Her most notably racist ruling was notably overruled by the Supreme Court earlier.

Side note: It's not only white males.

EDIT: And I do not understand why this was moved. It's very much a debate. It's political and has two heated sides battling.

The very statement of her judgment being "better" than others' judgment instantly cancels her out as a good judge in my opinion.

Being a judge is about interpreting the laws in the most objective manner possible (i.e. not influenced by past experiences, actions, feelings, etc.).

Now as human beings it is impossible for us to remove all empathy/sympathy/comparative judgment from our minds entirely. But you have to rule based on the situation rather than your "gut".

In the case of the test, it was the same test which had been administered in years past. It was for an optional promotion to a desk position. It featured questions about grammar and office conduct/relations. It was not racially biased, at all. It is absolutely disgusting for it to be thrown out because there wasn't a mix of races who passed it. Being beyond racism is the ability to ignore race altogether (i.e. everyone has an equal shot), not to make special exceptions to the rule for minorities.

I appreciate her life story and where she's come from and how it's been difficult. That story would be very moving if she were running for, say, State Representative. But it makes no impact at all on her being a JUDGE.

btw I'm moving this back to Symposium, it is totally acceptable as a debate.

are you fucking trolling

Sotomayor, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
this isn't "latina wommen are better than white men"

this is about RICHNESS OF EXPERIENCE. she's noting the usual proliferation of white males on the supreme court and trying to assure people that given her life experience she will make the best of her appointment there.

I don't care about the other things being said here because frankly I'm not an American and I only notice their government when I'm curious but painting her as a racist is sensationalist bullshit.

I think you're missing CrapFactory's intended emphasis for this argument but if it can be turned into a real argument and not just media bullshit then cool, I'm with.

I do agree that it's probably in our best interests to have a mix of backgrounds in the justice panel (perhaps to balance out opinions--as we cannot, like I said, obliterate all empathetic thought), and if she were less "holier-than-thou" about her qualifications I would be all for her.

But the fact that she said that her opinion is more valid than another person's based on personal hardship outside the courtroom, and race, is absolutely ridiculous.

She's saying that as a latina woman she can more often make better decisions that a white man who hasn't lived her life. How is that not racist?

And what about the firefighter thing. That was horrible.

I'm not saying she's a flat out racist like the KKK. I'm saying she makes decisions based on race in the wrong way.

oops i saw it as a bawww over a misunderstanding, which it pretty much still is lol. Kinda thought we weren't having threads like that in symposium, guess I was wrong.

Oh. Well I see it more as a valid debate personally regardless of the underlying intentions of the OP. I hear debates over it constantly on CNN (when they're not playing Michael Jackson footage that is). I'm actually surprised it wasn't brought up before now.

Venetia it's not like she actually believes that. it's standard to talk pretty when you get something nice, especially if it's kind of a special case. she just wants to assure the appropriate persons about the decision made -- she's just saying "yo I know you could have just tossed in another doddering white male to stay in stride with conventions but you obviously didn't so thanks."

she's just making the perfunctory gesture of saying she's gonna do a good job of it, I don't see why her wording is an issue.

She's saying that as a latina woman she can more often make better decisions that a white man who hasn't lived her life. How is that not racist?
oops you just killed your own point there bro

drop the racism angle. it's obvious that as far as that runs, you have no idea what you're talking about aside from what your parents have told you and what the pundits are acting scared about.

She shouldn't say stuff she doesn't believe and her history suggests that she does in fact believe that. I'll flip it around...

"I would hope that a wise white man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a black man who hasn't lived that life."

Seriously that's so wrong lol.

in a world where conventions are similarly flipped and the supreme court shows an overwhelming preference towards black judges, that statement is perfectly fine.

it is not about "x race is better than x race"

it is about "given my life experience I will do better than the other choices would have"

race's only part in that statement is as a nod towards the already present racial conventions in the supreme court

But to be specific it really matters what she meant by "richness of experience". Form the looks of it she's referring to her experience as a latina woman. That would suggest that the mere fact that she's a latina woman with the experience of being a latina woman would make her more able to make better decisions than a white man. If she meant "richness of experience" strictly as law experience... well that wouldn't make sense since anyone with more law experience could outdo in law other people without the same law experience.
And her history such as the whole firefighter fiasco thing would suggest that she's indeed making decisions based on race and race alone. How was that firefighter fiasco not racist? They did well on a test and got passed up on promotions because of their race SPECIFICALLY.
