Some pencil drawings

Just dumping some drawings I've done recently~

A sketch of a raccoon. Took me a couple hours and actually turned out better than I expected. I tried to do some more fur around the head but that turned out pretty badly. (blech, I despise drawing hair/fur) The blue part at the top was caused by my scanner, btw.

And now an owl. We had to do a piece in coloured pencil and this was pretty much my first attempt at doing anything good with coloured pencil. I don't really like how it turned out (I messed up the background evidently) and there's a million ways it could be improved, but I think it's alright for a first try at a new medium. I fiddled with the feathers at the bottom probably ore than I should have.

And a drawing of some steampunk-ish city. (the base for the drawing was done by somebody else, but I wish I could've come up with it!) I'm really unhappy with how the bottom turned out, especially the two people, but I had to really rush to finish it, else I could've taken a lot more time with it.(as in, less than two hours or so) It may not look like it but I've spent a good seven hours on it and it's still not even done. The lines are really wobbly in some areas and I screwed up with the people on the bottom with their figures. But other than those things I think it's the best thing I've ever drawn, so I guess it's been worth it! :D

Oh, and I plan to increase the contrast between the bottom area and the higher, top area and make the buildings "pop" a lot more. I dunno when I'll ever get the chance to finish it though :x

An eye. Kind of freaky looking, actually.

It got a little folded, evidently.

So yeah. Some samples of my (better) drawings.

Wow, the Steampunk city is amazing. Its really cool, and there is so much detail. The shading is really nice. Im always a sucker for Steampunk though. :)

My only gripe is the owl's left eye, as I expected to see more of the eye. I almost looks like its winking (or having an eye spasm.) Overall though, there are really good, keep up the good work Devy. :)

You know, I've showed the owl to a lot of people, and that's always the first thing they say to me. :x

But I copied it off of a picture, and that's what the picture looked like. In retrospect, though, I probably should've squeezed in some pblack for the pupil.

Thanks! :3

It's not a problem with the pupils,
rather what's so distracting with it is how the brow is uneven,
It's overly large, lopsided and irregular on the side where it covers the eye
It should be smaller than the brow on the left not large

But otherwise - Really nice work :thumb:
And I'm going to have to disagree
and say the people on the base of the city are really nicely done

Criminy, I didn't even notice how lopsided it was 'till now. Yikes. Thanks for the comment.

Y'know, a lot of times my problems come from just being lazy and not double checking my guidelines before I actually start the colouring.

Im loving the raccoon it looks so professional and real.
I think the owl looks too flat, like it might not be shaded enough
The Steampunk city is brilliant too. In looks so inviting, like I want to jump in and explore.

I added a drawing of an eye I did a few months ago. Unfortunately the page I drew it on got folded up so the page is wrinkled.

The lines are a tad sloppy and there could be some improvements but overall I like how it turned out.

Steampunk city is easily ,y fabourite out of the lot but I do have to say that the badger looks spiffing. Something about the hair on the top seems a bit off to me though, The eye does look a little off but altogether isn't too bad shame about the creases.

a few tips on your pencil work:

practice working on using just the pencil to fade from value to value, your work looks very smudgy, dont shade with your finger after the fact, as a matter of fact dont smudge at all, it makes your work look very amateur

you dont have enough difference in value, it makes your work look very flat.

your work tends to show the direction you shaded with the pencil, and your shading isnt smooth, work on using an almost elliptical motion, hard to explain, easy to show you if i could give you an example in person

basically you need to practice pressure control with the pencil, dont push down to make things darker as it makes your shading look...scratchy. instead build up gradually from light to dark.

example: say youre shading a gradient on a 1 inch square, with the light source on the right, start on the left side and shade your lightest value to where the gradient goes to white, then back to the left and slightly darken, again and again getting shorter and shorter passes, building it up to a smooth flowing gradient.

i would say go back to basics for a bit to just work on raw technique, spheres, cubes, cylinders. then work on line art, draw things without shading at all, get them clean and precise, finally put the two together. i think youve got the talent just not the practice and technique

Gulch666: I agree with pretty much everything you said. I've notived the "smudginess" of my work as well and I'm working on making my lines smoother and more defined.

Yeah, I probably should go back and practice my basic skills before diving head first into a lot of this stuff, and you have good points on shading that I've actually never heard before. I sometimes have difficulty with making my gradients smooth but I guess there's only one way to fix that. I'll take your advice into consideration, and thankies very much for the comment! 'preciate it :)

And thank you too megatronx! :D

youre very welcome, i help when i can, hopefully i dont come across as too harsh or like im talking down to you. cause its really just helpful advise, i enjoy helping when i can, and i like to see people improve and succeed
