So how did YOU find out about RPG Maker?

We all have our back-stories on how we encountered this wonderful program. Did you find out about it from a friend? see the Youtube video? Let's hear it!

The Battleon forums, from a link to a freewebs site on a .tk domain called "MakeRPGs" who claimed to have made the program (RM2k). From there, ended up at Crankeye and Creation Asylum, and then .Net/.Org.

A polish friend of mine showed me the polish equivalent PNE RMXP,
Downloaded it from rpgmaker.pl (which is down now, guess why)
Then when searching about what scripts where years later I ran across this site,
and that's my half-baked story

I found out about RM2K3 through a friend, we used that for a while, and then one day we found out that RMXP would be released. We didnt like the sound of XP at first, I dont know where we got our information from but we through it was gone be a bit more 3D than it was.... lol...
Anyway, after a while I finnaly tried the trial at another friends house, thought it was great and downloaded the trial myself.
Then one day while looking for new resources for it I came across RMXP.net

Yay for pathetic backstorys!

I remember coming across RM2k3 back in late 2004, although I'm not sure exactly how. I think I was looking up some game making programs and remember trying out 2k3, thinking it was the greatest thing ever and all the cool stuff I would make with it. I didn't find RMXP until 2006 but I still remember the innocent days where game making was fun and I'd show my games to all my friends who thought my skills were incredible. Now it's all serious and no fun D:

*sigh*

Actually, I had a cousin. He did a lot of programming and things on the computer. I watched him looking up something on the computer one day... one "RPG Maker 2003", and he left a few days later, and i saw him for the first time in like 4 years a few weeks ago. Anyway, the next year I remembered him saying that RPG Maker was a good game-making software, and decided to look it up. Of course the first result on the list was a download of RM2k3. I looked through it, browsed some sites, and was amazed by all the resources and support communities there were... I started out on PhanXGames, but left after completely ruining my reputation there. I came upon RMXP.org a few months later after looking through stuff on Creation Asylum, i believe. It was an RMXP.net link, and the url didn't exist it said. I figured it was a typo of some sort, and tried .com, and .org. .org worked and here i am now, a proud member of HBGames.org(I still like RMXP.org better :p).

I wandered to the boundaries of the forest I call home and then strode further, until at last I came upon the great falls which lie at the end of these lands. there I came upon the Devil who had taken the form of a box turtle sunning himself on a rock. the Devil spoke then, of an easy way to give form my thoughts and dreams. being the young fool I was I sat, transfixed by his words and promises. the box turtle who was the Devil then lifted one clawed hand, and the falls parted, and there lying at the base were the Internet and the Keygen and I took these gifts each under one arm and climbed beyond the falls to the lands which lay beneath.

Tell me about it... >_>

I first heard about RPG Maker XP before any of the other ones. I was on Bungie.net (that used to be my thang) and one guy made a thread about a game he had made in the program and I thought it would be interesting to see what the program was like. I freakin' loved it. I then started getting involved in communities. My first community was Neoseeker, which now is a barren wasteland where only a couple of bums post lol. One of them also posts here and I hope to god he doesn't see this post. XD

Started with RM2k. heard about it from my brothers frined, who was actually quite good at eventing. So, used 2k for a long time, then got 2k3, and didnt like the battle system as much. dunno, guess its all opinion there. So, went on using 2k/3 then heard about XP. I got excited, got it when it cam out, and immediately failed, because I didnt prepare any of the work, didnt think things through, and overall was too nub to understand great game design. Then, VX came out,a nd I refused to use it, cuz I hated the 32x32 chibi ugliness. Then, I lost interest all together in RM, and am now learning C++! hoorah!

(using opera, I miss the spellcheck of FF)

i stumbled upon don's translation of rm95 and dabled briefly with it, kinda gave up on it and found rm2k sometime later. made a half assed attempt at a game i ended up giving up on, but i did make a little gem messing around, there was basically no combat at all, it was kind of a slapstick comedy adventure game, where you played as a fat Italian chef and kinda just walked around endlessly. talking to people around the city, stepping on broken glass and used drug needles, getting hep c, good times...

then i found rm2k3, was the first time i actually put some real time into a game, i had sprites for like 12 characters finished (battle and map), a bunch of custom animations, weapons, basically spent a lot of time spriting with idraw, i loved that little app. it was coming a long very well, and then i reformatted my computer to clean it up a bit, and i thought i had backed up my work, but, i didnt...i was pissed, gave up on that, and then a few years later i started using rmxp, some busted ass, very early translation..struggled with figuring out scripts, got a legit version, yadda yadda, 5-6 years pass, current

I saw my bro playing some game called Vampires Dawn which was awesome at the time and still is cool, has some nice stuff and is not some gay stuff like Twilight even though it has vampires.
When I got my own computer I downloaded rm2k/3 right away and joined a german rpg maker forum (which mainly focuses on rm2k/3). Got interested in rmxp later, then rmvx and that's how I got to this site. (Because there are more rmxp users here)
Now I hate rpg maker, and decided to switch to GM. But I'll wait for version 8 and sprite in the meantime :D
Up to this point 4 years have passed, If I hadn't even cared about rm and started spriting right away I would be a good spriter (if I never stopped, and would have accepted criticism of course), but I never would have joined this forum ;-;

Ditto.

I found out about RPG Maker XP through a site called Amaranthia. I was still a member there at the time and heard about some members making games. I was like "I want to make games too!" so I downloaded the program and found out that it's my one and true love. :cute:

And that's my crappy love story with RPG Maker XP. lol

Heh
I could quote my fav.
She is currently constantly wet thinking about Sophist; the walls murmur at night that a get together is impossible, but she knows - O, she knows! - that he'll come riding through the sunset, on his white horse. He'll be there, his cowboy hat slightly tipped back, smoking an unfiltered cigarette, and she will blush, peering at his huge gun barrel.

To be continued!

I found myself wishing that there was a programme with which one could make one's own RPGs - this then lend me on to searching for "RPG Maker". I then found a link to Don Miguel's old page, GamingW etc and started playing around with rm95.

I think I clicked upon an advertisement or caught something at the corner of my eye so I downloaded the XP trial. In fact, if I remember correctly I was probably looking for something along the lines of RPG Maker 2 for PS2 and saw an ad for RMXP. Needless to say, I loved the program and purchased it. Came across .Net back in '05 looking for assistance.

Hm. Well, I had 001 engine, and I found it was too difficult and not in the style I had hoped for. So instead of searching for RPG maker on download.com (you gotta love Cnet), I searched it on google and came across RMXP. I decided to get it and it's been tons of fun.
