Okay, my characters are in the desert, and think the main one is delusional, and so they get him to an oasis, and then I want them to go to sleep, but I don't know how to get the screen to fade, and then get it to be darker, and fade back in during night, so The main character can tlak to the girl they thought he imagined.  Help me please!

Okay, here I go:
If XP: Use the "Tint Screen" event command to turn your screen black. Then, use a wait command, and then use "Tint Screen" again to make the screen go into a night-time effect.

If VX: Everything as before, but instead of the first Tint Screen, use Fadeout Screen, then use Tint Screen to get the desired night effect, then use Fadein Screen.

Wait, how do you access screen tinting?

It's on the second page of the event commands-- "Change Screen Color Tone" (that's for XP, not sure about VX). Move the bars in it to the left to make it darker, to the right to make it brighter.
