Sleep Deprivation

Every once in a while, I tend not to sleep for a few days, usually due to a lan party or something along those lines.
Two days ago, I decided to start an experiment: deprive myself of sleep for 72 hours straight.

I'm starting to hear random sounds in my head, and vision is kinda.. weird. Not hallucinations, but just strange.
I'm also drinking a lot of caffeinated drinks.

How about you guys? Ever have a wierd day from not sleeping long? Pulling several all-nighters?

Jason

Awesome Bro

Oh yeah don't worry you're not the only one, I pull all-nighters all the time, it's nothing out of the ordinary for my vision to go blurry and start hearing things due to lack of sleep, I also drink more coffee than anyone I know... not to mention these meds I've been on for like a month now, I'm stiff suffering from the main side effect which is hallucinations, lol...

I suffer from insomnia often, and I think it's due more to not being able to stop my brain from thinking all the time than anything. I usually get five or six hours of sleep a night during school days, if I'm lucky. It can really take a toll, though, especially when I have to pay attention or miss something crucial. So I can miss around twenty hours of sleep in an average school week.

When I was 15 me and a friend stayed up for 2nights and 3 days in a row. My friend was kinda scared, because he heard that when you stay up for more than 60hrs or so, you die. hehe. Well I proved him wrong. But it's just normal you hear or see wierd things, because your brain is overworked.
I don't like staying up anymore. Sleep is fun xD

Yeah, I have chronic insomnia, I usually take 12mg of melatonin each night before I sleep :P

I only have problems functioning when doing active things. Last night there was a modest mouse concert going on in my head, no joke.

Never actually hallucinated from just not sleeping, usually had a lot of caffeine beforehand :D

I have chronic insomnia also, the voices go away after a while, though i haven't had any visions. The worst case of voices i had was while i was living in Costa Rica, i was at my computer at about 3am listening to music and drawing on my tablet and i could swear that heard someone singing along with me, but it didnt sound like it was coming from my headset so i took it off and i still heard it, spooked me a bit but after a while it went away. I get about 11-20 hours of sleep a week, 30m here, 10m there. Nothing for too long. I dont know why but i cannot sleep for long periods of time anymore. The first time i stayed up for an entire 24hour period was in grade 6 and got progressively worse after that. I usually find myself going asleep around 4am and waking up shortly after then starting it all over again. I dont drink coffee, never have and never will. You have a choice in weather you sleep or not, that's cute. All and all I've learned to live with it. I dont get tired anymore, im sort of stuck at a neutral body energy level all the time. Dont get the bags anymore. Not sleeping hasn't affected my life in any significant way besides i have an extra 7 hours a day to kill. I dont take any medication because i like having the extra time. :specs:

Well, I choose to take something for my insomnia, I wouldn't call it cute.
Caffeine just keeps me far more alert than if I were just lying around. Also, I enjoy coffee :)

Ever try Turkish coffee?

wow. 11-20hrs. I sleep at least 60hrs a week and am still tired :haha:
Seems it's really about what your body is used to. But maybe someday you just drop dead, cuz you're body never has the chance to regenerate(REM sleep etc) :O

Well, I don't think that you would drop dead, you could have some severe health complications though. Melatonin is good for getting REM sleep.

I believe your metabolism adjusts to your sleeping habits and how much you rest, mine seems to have :)

I may not have insomnia, but I tend to be a night animal, back during the summer I'd stay up till the sun rises and sleep till like midday. Now that school reconvened, ai stay up till like 1, and sleep through lunch and french at school, lol

It seems that when i do sleep i can almsot never be woken up. Its like im dead to the world. I slept through two earth quakes and people knocking on my door like the god damn police while i was in costa rica. I guess being rested dosent always mean you have to go to sleep

I'm one of those people that need 10-12 hours of sleep. I can work on 6-8 hours of sleep but I end up taking a 2hr nap later in the day. When I'm awake I don't want to go to sleep and when I'm asleep I don't want to wake up.
I've tried staying awake for 48hrs once, couldn't do it. Maybe if I drank something with caffeine but I won't drink coffee or energy drinks, yuck. I heard drinking water helps you stay awake. If I didn't have a job or classes I'd experiment with it. It's a long boring drive into town, I wouldn't want an accident. Drowsy Driving is just as bad as drunk driving.
I looked it up. Sleep deprivation of more than 24 hours is equivalent to a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.10 percent. You might not be buzzed but your reaction time is going to be down.

On a good night, I get about 4 1/2 hours of sleep. I wake up usually 30 minutes after I fall asleep. During the day, I microsleep here and there.

Sleeping disorders run in my family, so this isn't surprising. Rather than take medication and become dependent upon it, I've learned to live with it. The lack of a proper sleep schedule makes my eyes look weird and I behave oddly sometimes, but it hasn't become dangeruous yet.

Yeah, I'm done with the experiment :P I kinda crashed a few hours ago.

Melatonin isn't chemically or mentally addictive at all. It's actually a hormone produced by your brain that regulates sleep :3

I once stayed up 72 hours in a row...
Then I started screaming at random people in the street...
Needless to say, that didn't go down too well with my parents...

High Hopes

Awesome Bro

It takes me one hour to fall asleep. I always set my alarm for 12:30 PM, even if I go to bed at 10:00 AM. I do it to force myself into a "normal" sleeping schedule. If I don't, it takes me longer to become tired, then I stay up just a bit longer each day. Pretty soon it's 7:00 am and I'm still awake and blasting "Slayer". Usually then I start waking up at 4:00 PM. Yup.

Recently I've been suffering from a horrible sleeping inbalance. I couldn't go to sleep until 4-5 AM, and if the next day allowed it, I'd sleep until 1 or 2 PM. Nothing makes me feel more worthless than waking up past noon every single day for a week.

So I figured out why I hate going to bed earlier than midnight. It's that I feel like I'm...wasting my time. That by sleeping, I'm wasting time.

I feel like I could be doing so much more, y'know? I mean, it's stupid, because sleep is important...but I can't help but feel super guilty about sleeping when I could be writing a novel or something :x

I used to go by that logic until I realized...there's so much more to do in the morning. I mean, the night being young is one thing, but if you wake up at like 2 PM, it feels like half the day is gone.
