Skills appear before their supposed to.

I just picked XP up after about 4 years of not having time to mess with RPG maker.

Anyways I got the latest and I'm back to trying to learn the trade as a hobby, and I've just had the skids put on a game I was working on after a week of putting my free time into it.

I've got a skill that shows up before it's supposed to.  The basic rule is, you kill the big boss, get a scroll out of a chest (add item) and use item (runs common event to add skill)

Now before that items is even reached, when I fight a mini boss I have in that area.. and it seems limited to bosses (probably because it takes one skill use in the fight) the next skill I put in for the chest retrieval shows up, and obviously I've not gotten that far yet.

I'm at a loss here, I've beaten my brains out to the point they've splattered across my walls, I've slipped on them, and had the rest spill out from my cranial impact to the floor below..

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd sure appreciate it.

Under the "Classes" tab in the database, do you have the said skill in the "Skills To Learn" Box for the class of the character who is suposed to learn the skill? If so, take it out. It doesn't need to be there.

Thanks for the reply, I'm glad to hear from you.

And no the skills are not in the initial skills box, this particular skill is the only one I'm having trouble with.
I just tried playing start to where I left off, got about half way there and the skill still activated.
Do I need to set up some kind of switch system for this, since it seems to want to execute the conditional branch for learnin' at what appears to be random (and only during battle)?

Hmm... quite strange. Sometimes when wierd stuff like this happens, I start a new save file and re-play what I have so far. It works most of the time (I don't know why). So, I's try doing just that. Start up your game and start from the beginning of it and see if it still happens. Sorry if I'm not that much help.

I tried that, I still got the same error.  I figured mebbe' there was some kind of game glitch.. so I set the learn skill item up to work with a chest switch, to work with a conditional branch set up in common events.  If switch is on (proving you have the item) then you can use it to learn skill. else nothing.

SO FAR it seems to have fixed it, but I ain't countin my chickens till their in the deep fryer.
(I'm assuming too many bare common events may have confused the software.. I don't know.. You know way more about RPG maker than I do lol)  9 times out of 10 when I figure I fixed something, the problem comes right back to haunt me.

One solution that might work is not ever having the item get put in your inventory. You could have some sort of cut-scene to go with it, and learn the skill durring the cut scene. That would pretty much blast the problem to bits.

Possible, I don't prefer to go that into detail since this is (so far) pretty much a learn as I go humor game.  I can do something a bit more serious when I get a better grasp of XP.

If this problem comes up again (I haven't tried it since my last 'fixit experiment, 3 days. about to pick it up again here shortly.)  I suppose I could just limit skills like that to shops, or lost folks... or just automatically have the skill added upon opening of a chest.  Some'n has to work lol
