Silent Hill: Homecoming

Ok, I'm about 3/4ths (maybe more) through this game now but I've seen enough thus far to give a mini review on it.

Now, my opinions are 100% biased, because I love the sweaty, dripping shit out of the SH series. I haven't played any of the ones for handhelds, but 1-4 (yes, even 4) were always my favorite survival horror games. Even more than Clock Tower, more than Resident Evil (which has honestly become more of the action genre than a survival horror).

What I've been ITCHING for, what I've been dying for, is another SH2. The nuances, the underlying metaphors in that game -- they were magnificent. SH3 had a lot of rivaling "freaky" moments, but the sexually deviant and mysteriously EVIL elements were absent. SH4 creeped the shit out of me only in the apartment (I lived in a VERY similar-looking apt at the time). SH1 is obviously a classic, and I still think the scariest SH monsters are the shadow babies from the elementary school.

Now then, SH5.

I was worried about this one since it's the 1st one not controlled by Team Silent (or, any Japanese maker: it's American-made). I worried that they'd make it more action-based. They made it star a soldier, and completely overhauled the fighting system. Don't get me wrong, it's long  overdue, but I worried that they would neglect the other elements.

Blissfully, they did not. There are still plenty of broken locks, extremely fucked-up inhabitants, interesting and gross monsters, and highly-detailed environments.

But something's off.

I'm still trying to put my finger on it, but this iteration is simply LESS SCARY. There have been a few trippy moments, but it seems like they missed opportunities for fear all over the place. It's ... Watered down, somehow.

First, the main character, Alex Shepherd, is probably the most level-headed guy to ever live. Ever. He seems absolutely unaffected by his environment. Sure, most SH characters (with exception of Heather) are blessed with balls of steel in being able to walk into Hell and not even complain. But there are moments where Alex can talk to his mom or other residents, and even after seeing the city in ruins and monsters threatening certain death, he barely even mentions that there's a problem.

For example, you finally find your mom. She tells you she was in the basement, after Alex only quizzically wonders about her dress being wet (ignoring the EXTREME state of disrepair of the house). You go in the basement and are attacked by a creature. You go back up to mommy, and Alex says nothing to her, nor she, him. It's very off, feels incomplete. Because if that'd happened to me, I'd be shaking her ass and slapping that bitch until she gave me some answers!

Second, you're in Hell only a small portion of the game, from time to time, and seemingly, only when you're about to go Mano e Mano with a boss. Don't get me wrong, the REGULAR Shepherd's Glen and Silent Hill are very nasty/creepy. But they obviously pale in comparison to the "Nasty World" versions (meat walls/floors, lots of rusted metal, grating, etc). The team did a really excellent job with the Hell worlds, it's a shame you don't see it more often.

Thirdly, plot-driven scenes and genuine "freak out" moments are rare and brief. There were times in SH1/2/3 where I was quite literally shitting bricks, and yet I've only seen one of these moments in SH5, and even then, it was very, very short.

Pyramid Head makes a comeback, which I thought was odd. I always thought the demons were specific to the characters they're focused on (i.e. James' demons aren't Alex's). However PH is the "executioner" for the SH cult, so I suppose he can still work. Also he's still badass. And so far, I've only seen him 1 time, for like 10 seconds (creepiest part in the game so far).

Lastly, the plot is kinda handed to you in a way. The subtleties and intricacies of the story are no longer handled in an optional manner. The piecework of the puzzle behind what's going on is mainly handled by required cutscenes, which really robbed a lot of unnerving-ness from the setting, and the game as a whole. Sure, there's still mystery, you'll still be kept guessing for a while, but things are falling into place too neatly for any SH game.

I think the combo of those 4 things above are what take away from the overall terror factor of the game.

I was also rather dejected to find that they used 3 elements straight from the movie:
1.) the way the world "disintigrates" into Hell -- I much prefered the gradual "nastining" (lol) in previous games
2.) The way swarms of bugs follow Pyramid Head
3.) The fact that cult members are possibly running the show, instead of the show running them (i.e. you actually FIGHT cult soldiers, human ones, toward the end. Which is lame :/, who wants to fight HUMANS, lol
I wouldn't say the movie was BAD, but I definitely think they should have distanced themselves from using the movie's elements.

Despite the shortcomings however, the combat IS a whole lot better. The areas you explore (while they're no bunny-filled amusement park of doom) are still plagued with nastiness, grime, and don't skimp on the corpses or meat. The ambient sound is still top-notch. I have 5.1 surround sound, and trust me, hearing meat slops or bugs chittering or random bellows/screeches erupting from behind me, is unsettling!

You also pit Alex with some choices no man should have to face, ESPECIALLY
choosing to kill your mom yourself or let her die horribly? Jesus christ that made ME feel bad!

And, though I'm not QUITE there yet, I've heard there are 6 endings, one of them a UFO ending (obviously). :D

Anyway, I'd give this round of gorey fun a 7.5/10. It met most of my expectations, but fell just short on the creep-factor.

where's dopples when you need him :(

anyway beat the game tonight. They REALLY hand you the plot on a silver platter but I actually wasn't expecting the "twist" until the end. The boss was easy-peasy though, only used 20 bullets and 5 health drinks :/

If you play this and beat it, re-watch the first 5 minutes, seriously. It will all suddenly make a HUGE amount of sense :)

I haven't really played the Silent Hill series. I rented SH3 and got as far as the subway. I have a demo of SH4.
Hearing that the main character is a solider is a put off. I don't like anything slightly army/military themed.

I might play this eventually but 3 and 4 sound and look a lot more interesting.

Actually 2 is the best one. 1st one is second to that, followed closely by #3, then probably this one, then 4. (on playability, creepiness, scary themes, etc)

4 had a few creepy moments but it wasn't an SH game at its core. It actually initially was another game with SH influences until they converted it into an SH iteration, which explains why it plays so differently.

There aren't any military themes in 5. Alex wears dogtags and you make assumptions based off some snippets and hints early on, and then later on. He doesn't even really act or look like a soldier.

Personally, I loved this one.  It didn't creep me out or make me jump, but it was an overall solid game.  It seems like they focused more on making it look good and improving combat, which is nice, but that alone does not make a horror game.  Still, this new system sets up the foundation for newer SHs on the new consoles.

I've been waiting for this game for a long time and I'm about to buy it. Probably this weekend. I started playing the SH serie this summer so it's a bit new to me. I've played all 4 games. In my opinion, the first is the best.

It's funny because, I was expecting this kind of review. I'm sure the game is good, but a I'm sure I'll never be as scared as in SH1.
What I like from SH, and I'm comparing it to RE, is that:

RE is trying to scare the shit outta you by doing; tada... tada... tadadaDADADADADADAD... BOUAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!
Silent hill is always like; tada... tada...tada... tada...tada... tada...tada... tada... and you're always wondering what's going to happen even if it doesn't always happen and THAT is scary :P

SH2 always tripped me out more than any of them, but yeah I agree. Anyway I'm not sayin this was a bad game at all, it just didn't get the horror quite right, which IMO is the most important part to this series.

I've always thought the very first Silent Hell was the creepiest and best out of all the titles. I kinda' started to play SH2, but never got very far, watched my buddy complete SH3 (which I thought was more cool than actually scary; I liked how you played as Heather but hated how Harry was kind of just written off... wtf) and never even touched or seen SH4. SO I'm assuming that this is a prequel?

No, I don't think so. The first ones, the town's evil was sticking within its borders. As the games progressed in number, the town started branching out. In this latest one, the evil influence has engulfed the neighboring town of Shepherd's Glen. So yeah it's definitely not a prequel.

man, you'd put 1 under 5?!

1 is way scarier than 5 (ignoring the early PS1 gfx lol) imo

separate thought:
the shadow effects in this game (5) are really neat though, I wish they'd utilized them more creatively.

I've seen ads for this game and it looks so cool, I want it, but I've never played a silent hill game.

Is this one noob friendly like story wise or should I pick up a older one for cheap and see how I like it?

er and is walking around like a normal game or is it like the old Resident Evil controls. I HATED them.

lol I just played through sh2 at my friend's house last weekend. Stayed up all night just to beat it. Pissed me off when I got the "in water" ending instead of "leave".

Anyway, one of the scariest parts in SH2 are when you're in the prison and you enter a cell in a long hallway. as soon as you enter the cell hallway you start hearing some crazy ass things. Then you enter the cell and you're locked in. That part scared me shitless caused I didn't remember it.

yeah sh2 was rife with crap-your-pants moments. sh5 unfortunately did not have this hardly at all.

@dark_linis: if i remember right, re1 controls were like a tank: if you want to go forward, you press up, if you want to turn, you press left or right. And no, this one doesn't control like a tank. He controls more like Lara in the newest Tomb Raider games, if you've played that.

The shitty graphics in SH1 are what make it the scariest one of all!

I haven't gotten my hands on this because I started playing them at the 3rd one. I have the 4th on computer but I'm to lazy to play it. The first one scares the shit out of me. Like when you wake up in that gas station or whatever and that thing crashes through the window [[it was in a SH demo I got in an old as PS magazine.]] either ways is it worth a buy or a rent though? I hear its awfully short and very linear. :/ I need something that'll keep me on the edge of my seat.

What about extras stuff as well? Like in the 3rd one you got the beam saber and colored blood and sexy beam and things. Are such things present in this or do you not know?

One thing I absolutely love though is the effect of the world changing. Seeing as how the movie is one of my current favorites I do like how they added that.

But I hear this is more "combat oriented" than anything. And the dodge button makes it super easy.

>8| careful you're badmouthing a classic
and anyway the gfx were amazing for back-then stuff, youngin.

all SHs are very linear. that doesn't mean bad.
1 is excellent, 2 is amazing, 3 is pretty good, 4 is alright (though it has some AWESOME creep-moments), 5 is the worst yet but still worth a rent.
i'd say rent all of them though. none of them take more than 8-12 hours to beat, and though they all have multiple endings, you can find all the endings on youtube, lol

like i said there are multiple endings. none of them in SH5 are particularly great, they're all way too short. the special weapon in SH5 is a ray gun that shoots a super-beam, which is pretty cool, but I think you have to beat the game on super-hard and never take damage or something @_@. there are also other outfits or whatever but nothing as awesome as the SH3's super happy love beam girl or whatever Heather became.

One thing I absolutely love though is the effect of the world changing. Seeing as how the movie is one of my current favorites I do like how they added that.
actually i hated that. it was much creepier in classic games to show a progression over time and space, as if you were being drawn into insanity. the movie wasn't bad but it shat all over the 1st game's plot, which pissed me off royally. if they had stuck to the REAL plot it would have been 298748319018749018347091873918490804 times scarier/better.

But I hear this is more "combat oriented" than anything. And the dodge button makes it super easy.
it's easy but all of them are fairly easy. actually, fighting-wise, i'd say this one was the hardest. It takes a long time to figure out how to time the dodge button JUST right.
the ammo/health pack dispersal is weird. there's a lot in the beginning, absolutely N-O-N-E in the middle, then way too much at the end.
