Siege's HKCP Workshop

I decided to get in on the act as well. For now i'll be spriting these RM2K Battlers on the HK Template. Later I hope to move on to a tileset, depending on how things go with the sprites.

These are the RM2K Battlers I will be creating first:

1/3/08: - 1st & 3rd Frame of Battler 1 - Complete
- 1st & 3rd Frame of Battler 2 - Complete
6/3/08: - Updated Female Sprite's Contrast, hair, shading, dress height, shoes.

All righty, I'm gonna go with critique first to get it out of the way, then good points after that. Here goes.

On the first sprite, the hair is all right, but needs some work. The strands are too accentuated, and it looks like her hair is just all-over shiny rather than reflecting any particular light source. I highly recommend you check out Venetia's Hair Tutorial, then give it another go, because the shape is pretty good.
The shape of the dress, though, seems odd to me. Based on the original sprite, it seems like the skirt of it should flare out directly from the hips, rather than from the knees. Also the yellow stripes (?) on the top look too straight. I think they should follow the curve of the dress over her body more, and need a bit more contrast in the shading. The shoes could use a bit more contrast as well, to really make them pop. Also, don't forget to shade the skin under the edges of the clothes and the hair (I tend to forget this a lot, but it does make a difference). You seem to have a good handle on the shading of the dress though, and overall the sprite is quite cute.

Unfortunately, I can't say much about the second sprite, because I know next to zilch about how to sprite armour. The only thing I thought stood out too much was the highlight on the legs, and maybe a little in other areas. Saying that, I have no idea how to fix it, but I'm sure one of the other HK spriters around here will be able to point out a fix (either that, or tell me it's just me, which is entirely possible.)

Great to see another HK spriter around, though! Pretty soon we'll take over the world! :thumb:

Ok, I'm gonna critique first aswell. The armor on the soldier is most twisted. With HK's the light source usually comes from the front of the sprite, that's why the armor looks so funny. You need to center the light source on the middle of each part of the armor and it should look a little better. Check out ShowKaizers examples in Resource Analysis, and you can see the perspective you need for doing armor.

@Britchik: I'm sorry but you are incorrect. It is Breeze that shall soon rule the earth!

I didn't want this to get shuffled off to the second page without my commenting on it. I think you have some solid colors and outlines there, they look good. However the shading needs a lot more depth and contrast and some of the outlines (esp. the hair) need to be less exaggerated.

You bring up some good points. I changed the height of the dress like u said, i think it looks better when compared with the original battler now. Tryed the work on the yellow lines also, hopefully they look less straight and more natural. Finally i shaded under the clothing and hair the shadow looks okay in my opinion but let me know what u think.

I have been working on the armoured male as well but theres little progress so i'll post that when its updated a little more.

Thanks for the crit, as above i've begun working on shading and changing the light source to a more central position.
