Sidequests - How to make them?

I can't figure out how to make a sidequest.

Not "Kill monsters til you get this, give it to a person, and he gives you gold"

I need to know how to make an event that effects another event that is on a differant tile, or on a differant map.


How do I do that? I'm working on a game that focuses heavily on quests to minimize the "RPG grinding"

You need to learn to use switches (or variables). They're really easy once you understand the concept behind them.

Just like a light switch, a switch has two positions: on or off. Once you turn a switch on in one event, it stays on until it's turned off again- no matter where or when that happens. That means that you can turn on a switch by talking to a character on one map, and then three maps later, you can have a totally separate event affected by the same switch.

Though only 999 switches can be used throughout a single game.

Name your switches well and the same switch can be used for a lot of things.

For instance, you need permission to get out of the city from the mayor.

After you visit the mayor you make a switch ON and name it "spoken to mayor"

Now when you come out you can have all the guards at all the gates of town activated from the same switch.  Another NPC may say something new as well after the "spoken to mayor" switch is ON, something like... "OH you've been to see the mayor... I hope we wasn't in one of his foul moods this morning".

All that can be done from the same switch, naming the switch so you understand why it is on is crucial.
