It really depends on what you want to do, keeping in mind that the more complex systems require much more work on your part. The great sideview scripts do require the use of really complex battlers, which is great if you have access to ones that suit your game, or have the talent to create them.

I don't, sadly, so I fake it with a simpler system in the project of mine that uses a sideview system.

I'm still learning... so I'll just use the default one I guess.
My main issue with it is the battler graphics. I've made a couple customized sprites and the battlers that come with RMXP are just too different.
Having slightly more detailed sprites on the battle screen is more desirable imo
