Shiroun Shadow (PA)

I'm doing a WIP, just to get a bit more of a feel for spriting. I want criticing, but don't turn this into a flame thread against me, as I am still working on it.

FIXED:

I'm not sure if I should change the head to the same colors as the body, or not.
He has no legs, that is on purpose.

C&C but don't flame like hell :P

EDIT2: New sprite, using .25: C&C

The first thing you could do, is to make the canvas White instead of Black, then you should see what you need to fix first. ;) Good luck.

Ok, shiroun, I would critique, but I can hardly see anything. Ya' think you could lighten the background a bit?

Edit: Whoops, I've been seconded. Anyway, please change the background.

Well, there's something wrong with those sprites. They are WAY to blurry. I would suggest getting that template from Despains thread again.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY BEAUTIFUL TEMPLATE

Tip number one: Don't use Anti-Aliasing. I'd suggest that you don't use photoshop at all, it's clearly fucked things up majorly.

I'll give you tip number two once you've posted your fixes due to tip number one.

Alright. Let's start. I suggest that you delete it and make a new one. There's clearly too many shades of each colour. Try to create the sprite with 4 shades of each colour one time, then add more if you need it. Don't blur it.

Awesome Bro

Sorry to say this, but it's really bad, I thought it was way too blurry, the template has somehow fucked up, and when des shown us the closer version, it looks like a few blobs, the feet are one big blob, and what did you do to the face ? It just looks like yellow/gold lines. Sorry but you'll just have to start again and not do whatever you did this time, try MS Paint for spriting, and don't use so many shades. Also, for clothes and shoes and whatever, try to follow the template, it's there as a guideline.

It looks to me like you've probably resized the sprite page and that's how it got anti-aliased.  If you're going to change the size of pixel art it has to be 2x, 3x, etc.  Fractional increases will result in serious distortion.  Stay away from Photoshop as a general rule, as well.  Can we have a sticky thread with pros/cons of various pixelling software so we can stop having a discussion on it in each new spriter's thread, and just post a link instead?

You don't have to stay away from photoshop just don't use strange tools. Use the pencil tool so you don't get that similar million shade effect when say using the brush tool. Sprites, especially the smaller they are need less shades. Stick with 3-5. BTW if you aren't using photoshop what are you using? That can help some things.

i was waiting for that.

Shiroun, we've been telling you the same type of stuff since the first time you've posted a sprite...

I don't get it, why do you keep using filters and blurs? It NEVER looks good, and we TELL you that it doesn't look good, yet you continue the pattern over and over again. It's obnoxious, it's like you don't learn anything from our critique. Seriously check out some tutorials or something. I've seen many crappy sprites posted here but yours as of right now are one of the worst.

Now that you've finally taken off all the effects, it looks like bad pixel work (specifically the bad shading effort).

You were using those effects to cover a lot of stuff up...and that isn't what being a pixel artist is about.
