Script for battler animations

I'm starting a new game and would like to have my battlers animated. (standard rmxp battlesystem) I tried eventing this but I can't make it work properly. Basically what I need is to have the battler change graphic though a series of poses that I'll draw to perform a different animation for each different action ( attack, defend, item...). also, they need to activate only during their turn of course. If there was some way to add a conditional branch for when a character attacks I could pull it off.
any help would be greatly appreciated
