What the heck? How come there are no decent sci-fi MMORPGs?! I'm sick of seeing the same freaking thing over and over; hunting monsters in stone-walled dungeons with a bunch of guys playing as knights, wizards, archers and clerics!!! Can't we have a decent game where we hunt mutants or aliens in metallic complexes as beam-saber warriors, reality-hackers, raygun sharpshooters and nanobot-equipped medics?
For peace sakes, nearly EVERY sci-fi mmo is so boring! Anarchy Online just feels so bland, Project Entropia felt more like some huge camping trip gone horribly wrong than a space colonization mission, Eve Online is like what happens when Fox from Star Fox gets a spinal injury and becomes a quadropaleigic, Star Wars Galaxies feels so generic, that "Age of Armor" thing is just plain wrong, and don't even get me started on The Matrix Online...
Most of the Sci-fi mmorpgs I've played have no style to them. They just seem bland and uninspired. At least in WoW you get lush, diverse landscapes and a brilliantly stylized world to explore (Not that I've ever played WoW... I'm just talking about what' I've seen of it). I wish they could make an MMO that looks like something SakuraPhoenix would make, with enough depth and diversity to make you want to venture further into the game world.
I don't understand... Doesn't the sci-fi community have enough members to make more than just a handfull of MMORPGs to cater to? It's not like there's only a tiiiiny few people who prefer sci-fi over high fantasy. Surely MMO players in general would get tired of the same setting all the time...
...And seriously... Does it ALWAYS have to be about a war? At least make it a war against a more crative enemy like man-eating mutants or something instead of some boring man vs. man story about space politics and questions what "really defines us as human"... Give me a break!
The only thing I know of close to a decent sci-fi mmorpg is City of Heroes, and I'm starting to get a little bored with it... There's not much diversity between NPC types; every moving thing in that game is shaped like a human (or in some rare cases, a spider). We get freakin' alien dinosaurs in Star Wars Galaxies for crying out loud!
In the end, I REALLY don't wanna end up having to try and create a "decent" sci-fi mmo of my own because nearly every indie MMORPG turns out either cancelled or a piece of crap, but I'm nearing the end of my freaking rope here...
Does anyone out there know of a good sci-fi MMORPG?!? Please tell me if you do!
(P.S., sorry if I sound like a jerk here... I'm pretty tired as I write this.)
