Sci-Fi MMORPG???

What the heck? How come there are no decent sci-fi MMORPGs?! I'm sick of seeing the same freaking thing over and over; hunting monsters in stone-walled dungeons with a bunch of guys playing as knights, wizards, archers and clerics!!! Can't we have a decent game where we hunt mutants or aliens in metallic complexes as beam-saber warriors, reality-hackers, raygun sharpshooters and nanobot-equipped medics?

For peace sakes, nearly EVERY sci-fi mmo is so boring! Anarchy Online just feels so bland, Project Entropia felt more like some huge camping trip gone horribly wrong than a space colonization mission, Eve Online is like what happens when Fox from Star Fox gets a spinal injury and becomes a quadropaleigic, Star Wars Galaxies feels so generic, that "Age of Armor" thing is just plain wrong, and don't even get me started on The Matrix Online...

Most of the Sci-fi mmorpgs I've played have no style to them. They just seem bland and uninspired. At least in WoW you get lush, diverse landscapes and a brilliantly stylized world to explore (Not that I've ever played WoW... I'm just talking about what' I've seen of it). I wish they could make an MMO that looks like something SakuraPhoenix would make, with enough depth and diversity to make you want to venture further into the game world.

I don't understand... Doesn't the sci-fi community have enough members to make more than just a handfull of MMORPGs to cater to? It's not like there's only a tiiiiny few people who prefer sci-fi over high fantasy. Surely MMO players in general would get tired of the same setting all the time...

...And seriously... Does it ALWAYS have to be about a war? At least make it a war against a more crative enemy like man-eating mutants or something instead of some boring man vs. man story about space politics and questions what "really defines us as human"... Give me a break!

The only thing I know of close to a decent sci-fi mmorpg is City of Heroes, and I'm starting to get a little bored with it... There's not much diversity between NPC types; every moving thing in that game is shaped like a human (or in some rare cases, a spider). We get freakin' alien dinosaurs in Star Wars Galaxies for crying out loud!

In the end, I REALLY don't wanna end up having to try and create a "decent" sci-fi mmo of my own because nearly every indie MMORPG turns out either cancelled or a piece of crap, but I'm nearing the end of my freaking rope here...

Does anyone out there know of a good sci-fi MMORPG?!? Please tell me if you do!

(P.S., sorry if I sound like a jerk here... I'm pretty tired as I write this.)

I think you've overlooked RF Online (Rising Force Online), it's a sci-fi MMORPG where you either play as cyborg Accretians, dwarf-like mech-riding Bellatos and elf-like magical Corites. However, these three races are at war against each other for Talics (it's the game's plot device and if you happen to own a Talic, you can make your weapon powerful!)

Also, there's this pre-futuristic MMORPG and it's called N-Age (That sounds New Age).

OP already expressed distaste for Eve Online.

RF Online isn't bad, as mentioned before, but it's certainly not WoW quality. It's more of a Lineage II clone korean grind fest.

What are you looking for in an MMO because I honestly don't understand where your complaints are coming from.  You seem to want to do the exact same things you do in fantasy MMO's except with a sci-fi skin on them.  That to me is boring.

I love EVE; it has the best skill system out of any MMO I've played and the entire economy is controlled by the players which gives it a very personal feel.  Tabula Rasa is basically a twitch shooter where you blow everything up in range which is what I pretty much avoid in an MMO.  There's Neocron 2 which is a cyberpunk RPG but like EVE it's pretty user unfriendly and only for hardcore gamers.

*waves a small "Go Phantasy Star Universe" flag.*  T_T;;;

This, though you may want to consider that the game's current content doesn't last long. The character customization is pretty bitchin at that too.

AirRivals is, in my opinion, a pretty good sci-fi MMORPG. It has some basic flight simulation and shooting elements, but it holds very true to its MMORPG-ness with levels, customizability, and insanely huge multiplayer wars. It's not translated all that well, though. Actually the only problem with the translation is that they didn't take lines into account so you have words that are split into two by a line-break; it's still easy to read.

News flash: all MMO's out now are boring trash.

A for effort, but I'm afraid you fail at being edgy.

Certainly, any MMO(RPG) will be boring if you try to get through it soloing, focus only on killing the next beastie up, and generally ignore any features that attempt to break the grind a bit. I find that the people who complain are the ones who are guilty of one or more of these. Hell, it isn't a bad thing at all, MMO(RPG)s just might not be your cup of tea unless you find one that fits your niche. MMORPGs are about the connections as much as the grinding; for example, in some of them once you get accepted into a guild its members might powerlevel you to max quickly and you can grief the hell out of newbies if that's the sort of thing that floats your boat.

Anyways, I suggest at least taking a look at RF Online. Keep in mind, though, that while the level grind isn't bad at all, you'll have to grind your stats, or PTs, if you don't want to gimp your character. At first grinding PTs is very easy but as you level it'll take longer and longer.

Even if you dislike fantasy type stuff I reccomend looking at Shadowbane, it's probably one of the best PvP-centric MMORPGs I've played.

Who is trying to be edgy? I'm clearly speaking from my own sentiments. I'll thank you not to impose your own assumptions upon my posts.

I've played nearly every MMO to date, I started the genre when it was in its infancy. I only have a few that I truly enjoyed.
