Schooling

School just started back for me today and I guess it wasn't too bad; getting to go to technical school is going to help my remaining three years fly by a lot smoother. Anyways, I was inspired to make a topic asking you guys what your plans are/were involving schooling.

I myself am going to technical school for the remainder of my high school years learning about industrial maintenance. It's basically learning to install and keep large machines in working condition in large plants and factories. So a good deal of wiring and pneumatics work is involved.

So what are/you guys planning/have done?

Well I'm taking a test this Thursday to see if this place called Voc Rehab and pay for me to go to a college or school so I can take a couple of classes. I want to do office work, but I hear you need skills and certifications, and that's what I want to do. XD

god voc rehab is a pain in the ass D: but eventually you get something good from it

im in my last semester of school for my second degree, i grauate in december and ill prolly head off to grad school in the spring for my masters or ill go back for a 3rd bachelors degree; my parents are kind of pissed because in the time i takes for me to do all this i could be working on my doctorate (im just lazy as hell). i honestly dont wanna keep going but A) free money and b) dont have to teach whiny kids

school is pretty boring and easy imo, only part i have any qualms with is the waking up to go to it; that and actually paying attention.

i dropped out of art school after about a year or so of it
it was a horrible school with the worst administration i've ever seen and it would've ended up costing me $80k+ so i figured i'd cut my losses.

i need to go back to school but for something i want to do, for a biology degree. probably won't get a chance until next year. it will be embarrassing to be starting school in my late 20's but i gotta do it i guess

class starts on the 23rd for me. Another three semesters and I should have a second associate's degree, this time in 3D graphics and animation. My first was in Video Game Design. After that, I'll probably see if I can get a job in the field.

I am almost finished with my masters degree software engineering/computer science and I really look forward to finishing it and begin my job.
Haven't had summer vacation this time around. I guess I am going to miss the 2-3 months summer vacations.

@Ven: If you wait you'll only get older

4th year at Uni starts on the 30th; around 3 more semesters and I should (finally D:) graduate with a bachelor's in Japanese with a certificate in Asian Studies. Also (obviously) just spent a year abroad. Planning on going to grad school to get a Masters in secondary education or some shit~

i know :/ it's rough going back to school when you still have to work full time. i've been trying to work down my debt so i can maybe switch to part-time work instead but it's looking less and less likely. i didn't want to start again in tampa though b/c transferring credits is a pain in the ass and i don't want to live in this city.

also @Tindy: what career field are you looking to enter? the only thing i can think of that an asian studies major'd get you is teaching asian studies :P

One of my friends who started at uni the same time as me is over 30 years old.
But really. People who are 50+ stand out. I remember a lady who consistently came to the math lectures. She was old enough to be the mother of the lecturer :x

You are not old enough that it really matters except perhaps for the first year. (I am basing this entirely on my experiences at my uni)

The money is another matter which I honestly cannot put myself into. I just hope can figure something out which isn't too hideous.

*hugs*

starting in my second year in the Faculty of Engineering this september. because of a series of stupid mistakes, however, I will be taking mainly first-year courses.

remember, kids: study and attend classes! I am a pretty smart guy but I choked pretty hard on account of not actually showing up to most of them.

honestly, I'm not sure engineering is my thing. I feel like I'm a lot more suited to the arts, but I have no idea what I'd do if I went for it. I guess I'll figure it out as I go.

if I do continue with engineering, though, I'm gonna try to get into medical technologies. robotic prosthetics and that sort of thing are really cool. we have robotic hands that receive signals from the arm's own nerves. we have cameras that plug into the optic nerve and let a blind man see in stunning 12x12 resolution. we have the capability to plug a machine directly into someone's brain, at which point the brain adapts to this new appendage with stunning speed. the concept's been proven, so now there's room to perfect. it'd help if we could stop the brain tissue from scabbing over at the contact point, for one thing.

there's also a little project my dad was working on for a decade or so that he's passed on to me. if either of us manages to make it work, it'll be pretty huge. like, the discovery of electricity-huge. it's sort of tough to think on right now but I figure I'd make a lot more headway in it if I went with the sciences instead of arts.

i'm still in high school! will be starting my final year in september with a focus on the physical sciences.

some of you may already know but i plan on going to mcgill university in montreal. i want to major in atmospheric and oceanic sciences but will maybe get a joint major with physics as well. i'm not really sure what kind of stuff you can do with a physics degree but i mostly just find that kind of stuff incredibly cool.

i've always been really interested in pursuing a career that has something to do with weather. at first i wanted to be a meteorologist but i'm kind of looking more into climatology now. ideally i'd like to get a research position with environment canada or something, but we'll see what happens.

the biggest hurdle for me will just be being so far away. the closest family i have to montreal all live near toronto. i live near detroit, so it's really far away! i'm pretty good at making friends and i can speak good french so language won't be too much of a problem but it still makes me nervous thinking how completely isolated i'll be. i've lived in a town of no more than 5 000 people my whole life, so moving to a city with millions is going to be really tough.

money will also be tough to get but i'm going to apply for as many scholarships and loans as i can. i get good marks and all (my average last year was 92%) so i'm not worried about getting into the school, but money is still going to be very tight. we don't exactly have a lot of money to go around.

okay, you can't say this without elaborating.

Okay, I'll admit I'm fascinated about this too. You can't just drop something like this and not give us more info.

I definitely made it sound cooler than it is :x

he's been playing around with different materials trying to come up with something that superconducts at room temperature. something about rigidity, mainly; preventing electrons from switching energy levels based on the material and not the temperature. didn't make a whole lot of headway, but his equipment was basically limited to stuff you'd find in the kitchen. for the longest time I'd keep finding, like, tupperware containers full of hard black stuff. if I got into materials engineering I might be able to fail at it a little more glamorously.

it'd be cool, though. probably not HEH IT'S AS BIG AS ELECTRICITY ITSELF but it'd eliminate heat as a problem in electronics and make computers a lot more powerful. probably make a lot of other cool things possible further down the road, too.

if you'd prefer a much crazier scenario, there was apparently some test that suggested a rapidly spinning superconductor carrying a current could defy gravity, but it heated up and stopped working before they could draw any real conclusions. that sounds a little too silly to be real, though. there are a lot of weird theories about superconductors going around, I guess. once we get them working in less limited conditions we can disappoint ourselves to our hearts' content.
