RPG Maker at HBGames

RPG Maker

We've been using RPG Maker here since the days of RMXP.net in 2004. It's always been our big thing.

This is a big time for RPG Maker. With a prominent site unofficially closing its doors in exodus, and Enterbrain's American representatives (Degica) setting up an official forum, the next few weeks are probably quite important in shaping the future of the RPG Maker community.

As such I'd like to clear up some possible misconceptions etc.

Are we still an RPG Maker site?

We are not solely an RPG Maker site and have not been since 2009. We still continue to support it and have an active community of users of the software, however we also support other programs.

Does this mean RPG Maker is dead on .org?

No! We're still exactly the same as before with regards to RPG Maker. The RPG Maker support section isn't getting smaller. Other engines are being added which we support, but our RPG Maker support is untouched and still in the opinion of many unrivaled.

We have here the largest English RPG Maker community wrapped up inside us, with much more on top. Supporting other engines isn't going to suddenly kill our RPG Making community, you don't need to worry.

Why would we post here when there are official forums?

There are official forums for many things, they're not always better. They offer a different experience. Just as people post on several RPG Maker sites to begin with, the official forums are certainly not going to kill off HBGames.

Will there ever be a focus on RPG Maker again?

While we aren't solely an RPG maker site any more, there is no reason why some future contests can't be RPG Maker oriented, or news/updates regarding RPG Maker carried out. But expect to see content for other engines, too.

Do the staff still use RPG Maker?

I don't think it's really that important what the staff use. But, some of us still do. I for one use it, at the moment for my University final project, but have projects planned in it after University ends too.

Who runs the official forums?

The official forums are ran by former moderators of rpgmakervx.net who have since recommended everybody leave their old site. I am actually quite insulted that Degica never came here, but there is nothing we can do about that.

I don't think you're doing enough.

If you think we're not doing enough RPG-makery things on the site you can always leave feedback. Supporting other makers doesn't mean we can't ever touch RPG Maker again.

It just means that RPG Maker has an equal footing with any other engine on the site. Projects and Completed Games can be created with any engine (indeed without one too). Only the RPG Maker support and scripts boards are limited in their scope.

Why do we have RPG maker support boards if we're an any-engine site?

Because they are already here. I don't believe in removing things at all if they're going well, and the RPG Maker boards are doing very well. It doesn't hurt other engines to still have RPG Maker support going.

Will there be scope limited boards for other engines?

If enough people want to learn to use them, there can be. At the moment we have one for Construct 2, which will hopefully grow to match the RPG Maker support boards.

Anything which picks up a very substantial amount of topics in Other Engine Support has potential to become it's own board.

But note - if nobody posts about it, we'll never know you're using it. To justify it's own board it has to have a following!

I miss RPG maker. :(
But if I can sell my current project, it'd be amazing. Both the money, and that people will play it.
Still, RPG Maker will always be an important part of my childhood (and a less important part of my adulthood).

Praise be this topic! Very well said.

I researched a lot of game engines before I dived into Construct 2 just to participate the contest for a start. I've been having so much trouble finding an engine that I want to settle with, because every engine out there is unique in strengths and different engines are just made to handle certain mechanics better and easier, out of the box.

That being said, I don't believe the whole RPG Maker series is becoming obsolete at all. It still has its unique strength in easier handling of full blown RPGs, and built-in features that other engines don't include in the initial installation. The engine itself just needs to be made used of.
