Roleplaying

Roleplaying, not the stuff that requires the whips and chains but the kind you do on a chat server when you're bored. I find roleplaying to be an interesting use of my spare time, letting my writing skills and boredom combind into a story that intertwines with whatever characters I happen to run into. It has become one of my favorite hobbies aside from my girlfriend and making games in XP. (Note: my gf likes to roleplay with me, we have all sorts of characters that have stories together)

So roleplay... What do you think of it? Do you roleplay any interesting characters? Forum roleplay or chat server? D&D tabletop or computer? Dice rolling or 'honor system' in battles and such? Just what do you think of it and if you are a roleplayer, why do you do it?

Not my cup of tea. I admit I've never tried it, but that's because it seems pretty boring. It may just be because I'm more of a visually stimulated person, so I've always enjoyed video games and movies. But maybe I'm missing something, what's so great about it?

Well in roleplay you not only get to be anyone you wish, but you get to write an amazing story to go along with that character. After a while you feel like that person and you seems to blend with your roleplay character. It's a way to imagine yourself doing amazing things without any chance of getting hurt. Having a ballanced healthy life (exercise much?) along with roleplay can leave your mind and body very happy... if that's your cup of tea.

I've never tried roleplay. I'd probably do it for a bit, but with a lot of things get bored of it quickly. That's just the kind of person I am. :/

I think we used to have a Roleplaying forum here but it was deleted because people were making crappy roleplays or something like that.

We used to have a whole roleplaying subforum. But it didn't get very much activity. You can still RP in Literary Analysis. As long as the RP isn't dumb as hell.

I did it sometimes when I was a young teenager (14~), but after a while, I started feeling kind of silly about it. I can still see the allure of playing a character and having people interact with you, but people so seldom do the things you want them to. Plus I have such a dirty mind now, all I can foresee is RP-cybering ... And cybering is pretty lame :/ (unless you have a webcam :x)

The only time I've ever roleplayed was when me and a friend came up with a brilliantly hilarious story about a female car salesman and a boy who works at arby's.

I don't want any other experiences to ruin that one.

I used to roleplay when I was quite a bit younger. Lots of battle RP, under T2 style and rules, if you know what that means. If you don't, I wouldn't doubt it. I haven't heard the term in YEARS. My two characters were Sparks (a super saiyajin), and Prince Mistin Mercerius (prince of, you guessed it, Mercury. it was a sailor moon based roleplay)

Hmm... I guess I'm alone in my love of roleplay here at .ORG... I was hoping to find some like minded people to start roleplaying with at my favorite roleplay site. (I wouldn't be stupid enough to start roleplaying here...) Besides, I prefer chat based. T2 is old school, but I have a bastardized version of it I use.

Aye, that it is old school. But every time I've roleplayed with people within the past three or so years, they've used auto-style RP. Which is the ultimate of bastardization. Whats the website you RP at, I wouldn't mind checking it out.

The first two forums I belonged to were RP, so I guess I RP'd for about 7 years or so. And then I stopped, basically because most roleplay websites just aren't my cup of tea (bad stories, bad RPers, trolls, webspeak, etc etc etc.) Same thing happened with anime - there's just such a mass of awful people that I relate to it that I'm either simply turned off or disgusted by it.

I guess I'll PM it to you, I wouldn't want everyone going crazy on us over it... >.>

Actually there are quite a lot of people here who are interested in Rp'ing so maybe the link won't be such a bad thing.

Okay, the site is use is...

You can have profiles for character info with genders male, female, genderless. All info added is up to you, as they start as a blank template. I don't think there is a length size... one image at the end of the profile for your character's apperance. A link that appears above your profile for your website (optional) and the ability to create and Mod your own custom rules. Private rooms with passwords and the works. Check it out.

I roleplayed for a number of years, although in our case it wasn't so much wish-fulfilment or escapism as it was collaborative storytelling. I ran a big science fiction project for a few years that was basically a bunch of interconnecting stories written by different people. It was a fun way to write because it had instant gratification in a way writing by yourself doesn't--you get other people's feedback instantly, and you can interact with them and their storylines (we'd collaborate on conversations and such, which was fun). I also found a really good group of people to do it with. But it died eventually, and yeah, it's just too hard to find people who are actually good writers, have compatible ideas, get along well, and are reliable. And tbh, I'm just not really interested in it anymore for a number of reasons. These days I write novels instead.

Edit: To clarify, this was forum-based, not chat-based, so we spent considerable amounts of time actually writing and revising. So the writing quality was important, not just what was going on.

Internet roleplay > D&D imo

Though I do freeform roleplay, structured roleplay, D&D and forum roleplay. I just can't seem to get enough. It's when the :japfag:s and teenagers get involved is when the roleplays go way way downhill. They don't seem to get the whole, 'writing a collective story' idea and are more into cybering or god modding all over the place. Though some, to thier credit, are not this way... most are.

Whoa Peri, I did that in highschool, too. And yeah, science fiction

I wish I still had the story. It was called "Enter Galactic". It was meant to be a hyper-cheezy rated-PG romance novel set against the backdrop of an extremely advanced future. It was pretty funny :) (to us, and to some other highschoolers, anyway.)
