RMXP Radio?

What would you guys think of an RMXP shoutcast radio?
Could it work? Who would DJ? What kind of music or other content would it have?

I did it a few times in IRC last summer. I'd always thought of getting it setup, but couldn't find a willing host.

how much webspace would you need because i might be able to find a cheap host with a lot of space =]

The space isn't the issue- the songs are streamed to the server - rather, the issue is the large bandwidth it takes and the need for SSH access to set up the shoutcast system in the first place.

Myono, there is a programme that does it on p2p technology somewhat similar to that of limewire and its a great programme i used it myself once before...i was impressed as its fast and reliable and requires little limited connection, i will try and find it.

Mercora thats the one.... http://www.mercora.com

Services like that are extremely different to Shoutcast. Not only will it be full of adverts you have no control over, you don't get station control and so have to have it listened too by the means they dictate. It also means you couldn't allow people to remotely DJ at times that they desire.

Now that is quite good. Thats the kind of thing you'd need.

Anyway, to answer Shadow's orginal question, it worked like this:

-A server runs the shoutcast setup (last summer it was on my PC as it was only for an afternoon).
-Users use SAM Broadcasting, or an alternative, to connect with the details, which they are only given once they publicly announce they will DJ for a slot.
-The password changes every 24hours.
-The DJs may then play whatever they want or do whatever they want. When no DJs are on, the Shoutcast Auto DJ plugin is activated to play low bandwith requiring "Muzak" or midi files (given it's an RMXP radio, probably RMXP midis then).

well if we needed good hosting i found a good one:

for about ?45 (about $90US) we'd be getting the good shit and unlimited bandwidth, so how about that?

You wouldn't be allowed to run a shoutcast server on that. Just because you have the ability doesn't mean your host will be happy with you doing it. Generally you have to own your own server to get away with doing it. Or failing that, just host it yourself, though to support a decent amount of listeners you're going to have to either have a beefy connection or broadcast at low quality.

=D

Most people want to listen when I play cheesy 90's pop >_>

We already have the resources, hosting for the radio could be done by Slacked, at no additional cost to anyone. Slacked has a few dedicated servers and bandwidth measured in terabytes. I'm just wondering if there's enough interest in doing something like this.

That sounds great! if it's possible we could set up an initial DJ team and as we get more listeners we could get more people to DJ for a slot when we're not DJ'ing, and we could probably either do a request page or a request channel on IRC or something like that, that would be cool :)

EDIT: P.S. I'm definetely up for it ^_^

Shadow, if you needed assistance I could definitely help organise it if you need me to. I have the old setup still lying around somewhere, and the old timetable system where users could request slots and the server would read from them to know what to change the DJ text to.

I am certain it'd be a popular feature. From what I can remember, the average members was 8 on the afternoon I did it (largely automated midis during the time mind) and peaked around 24 when I tried DJIng it. That was pretty good for something done with no advertising, I thought.

Actually speaking from experience (being a DJ on slacked :P) the streaming software I use streams the music from my PC to the shoutcast server and if I set it up I can allow it so you can chose any song on my PC and it'll queue it up to play next.

So for instance if I was doing a trance dj session you could look at all my trance songs and pick what you like if you didnt like my current playlist. Allows more user interaction which is a good thing because then that way you hear what songs you want to hear and not just any old crap lol

Joe, would that be SAM Broadcaster by any chance? Thats what I was using last year, but never got around to setting up the user requests bit.

If you guys do this, you should try to find a diverse amount of DJs as possible. By diverse means that I don't want to hear Trance and Metal 24/7.

What<s wrong with metal? metal is good for your health lol .. no seriously, she got a point, you should make a pool about what kind of music people want to hear. And then search for a dj in each style or someone being able to deal with many styles at once.

(FYI, Metal is probably the most damaging given the volume it's at)

Fall of the tyrant: That would not allow live broadcasts, only prerecorded shows.
