Requiem 127

For the past 600 years, time has been marked by the beginnings and ends of war. Certainly, battles have been fought on Nanara since the beginning of time, but over half a century ago began the war to end all wars. From its very start, all intelligent life involved themselves in a grandiose power struggle, one that by its end, would decide the world’s single domineering race. That is, the intention from the very start was the extinction of all species, save one. In the beginning, many believed that the cause was just, but as time went on, most of the population lost interest. The sacrifices of a half-century war were more than many civilizations could handle, and by the first two hundred years, more than three quarters of all known species, intelligent or not, had been completely wiped out. The wisest ones retreated early; both the dwarves and celestials had no known part in the war, nor can be found anywhere on Nanara present-day.

Requiem, year 127: The end of all wars. For over a century, the elves, fey, and subhumans struggled against man, united, in the final battle. It seemed that with the prior retreat of netherkind, the allied front would pull through, but with the advent of gunpowder and firearms, humanity won. A treaty was formed, and the other races were allowed to remain in peace with the acknowledgment of being classified as inferior beings. Bitterly, they agreed. The fighting was over.

On this fateful day, a human legion is returning home, and dismisses a band headed towards Cada Mishea, bearing wagons upon wagons of the southerners’ dead. Niels Ralty, their last surviving navigator, must pick up the slack where his predecessor failed, and keep the company from becoming any more lost than they already are. Both they and the Witch Brigade seem to be headed across the Sky Highway, a cross-continent relic-of-a-bridge, and a meeting of the two rivals seems almost fated.

Far East, across desert and ocean, Castle Nova is raided by a winged beast. Towns are left in ruin all over the continent, and all fingers point to the interference of dragons, few of which have been seen, even before the war. Cult activity in the western desert has disturbed the nearby elven colonies, however, and some suspect a vengeful conspiracy against their human oppressors.

“Magic finger. I’m serious, master!”

BATTLE OVERVIEW

Niels
Despite being kicked out of the legion, Niels was able to keep his big honkin’ gun. It’s reasonable as a melee weapon, thankfully, because he starts off without any ammo. None of his very varried offensive skills work without ammunition, so it’s important to conserve whatever you can find, until you get to Cada Mishea. Still, he has a few defensive options to work with, and can take at least a few hits.

Einar’s magic is most effective against enemies that cause elemental damage or come in swarms, none of which dwell on Sky Highway. Despite being a mage, he does not have nuking powers. His spells affect the environment, and can cripple enemies in ways you might not imagine. Although almost completely useless out of the box, he’s got more than enough health to stay alive long after Niels goes down.

Boy, can she heal. Most of her magic requires sacrifice, usually in the form of her own health, though, so she’s rarely at full strength. Her normal attack is stronger than Niels’ (without ammo), and for short amounts of time, can raise her abilities to extraordinary proportions. She doesn’t stick around for very long periods of time, and takes damage very badly.

Not as much of a flake (in numerous ways) as Rani, the princess relies on magic powers bestowed upon her for no apparent reason. Simply by pointing, and with a little concentration, Mal can cause things to burst into flames, turn into a chicken, or cause enemies to become incredibly unlucky. She’s off on her own, and can’t sustain herself without MP, so running from battle isn’t always a bad choice.

Florian
As a genuine, hardy knight, there isn’t much he can’t accomplish. All he’s got are attack options, but they’ll get him through the day, easy.

Kerberos Welkyn (Not even remotely present in demo!)
Half-elf, half-fey, all nuke. Lacking much party-support, he deals in pure, magical damage, and deals hard. Like Einar, he work with the elements, but is much less paralyzed by resistant enemies. Welkyn has decent stats all-around, with the exception of an inexplicable weakness to all things magical.

PREMISES

At first, the only foreseeable goal is crossing the Highway home. After you cross the impossible length of road, after it seems like you’re home-free, Einar develops a few problems of his own. Cada Mishea might be a lovely little city, but it’s just not safe. Niels, very much owing his life to his witch companion, decides not to return home just yet, and help Einar track down a despicable murderer. Unfortunately, the trail leads all the way to the West Nova desert, a ship’s ride away in the wrong direction(of Cada Fury, Niels’ final destination).

Meanwhile, the mystery of Princess Nova unravels, and her fate might not have been as unpleasant as the rumors make it out to be. A valiant Novan knight seeks her out, but there’s no telling if he’ll reach her...

Despite the end of hundreds of years of war, the Nanara is far from peace. The drastic changes made by the mass extinctions have practically thrown the world off its axis, and every last citizen has his part in putting the pieces back together. If only those elves would just cooperate!

It's really a horrible place to go through on foot for a reason.

Playing with custom cracked road tiles. Not going well.

Sounds interesting, and the story and bio presentation makes the characters come off likeable.

My advice for this project, as little as it may matter, is to:
1. Change the project name. Requiem 127 may be fitting to the story conflict, but does not create a good image to others. End result is that many will just scroll by this topic.
2. Don't try and do everything with game direction. Seeing as how a huge war is the basis of the backstory, I just wanted to let that be known. A project generally can either pull off the 'small' adventuring or the 'epic' storyline themes, I wouldn't recommend going for both.

Not to be a nuisance, I'm just lending my opinion on the subjects [even though those things may already be known to you]. Anyways, I wish you luck with the project and am waiting on further updates.

I actually really like the title.

The game looks good so far- it has a Western feel to it, despite the face graphics, and that is a very thing. I am relieved to see guns, and even more so to see that you don't have a character named Sakura.

And chicks with cowboy hats is always a major ingredient in the recipe for win.

I quite like the sound of this. The story sounds pretty original and the characters are pretty good even though they're edits.

Btw when you're taking screenshots switch to a normal layer and take off 'Dim Other Layers'.

@ Breeze_Arkayne: Requiem is a nast title choice, IMO, out of context. If I didn't kind of latch onto the theme of naming each war era after songish terms, I likely wouldn't have gone this way. It's a big throwback to the main character's ties to dead bodies, and the overall theme about death being totally broken. Which is really just an excuse. (And I think it's cute on my part! ;>_>)

Anyhoo, I don't see the war as much besides background, but that's just me. I'm very bad at not trying to hit both nails on the head, I'll give you that, but I think that being able to hit two levels at once would be pretty powerful, assuming I don't fail miserably.

@ The Despain: I've been plotting a plot to draw some less-generic face graphics, and while I can't promise it not being Japanese-y, I'm glad that somebody else in this little world digs cowboy hats.

@ kaos: Thanks much! I don't even pay attention to those menus, and I really should.

...In other news, a rough version of Nova's profile pic is up, as well as a non-griddy version of Tennzhet, and a little blurb about another mage.

Bump with a screenshot of a section of the highway and Mt. Gozz, and not-so-good Einar art. My mapping is cracky. ;_;

I believe you're only meant to bump when adding material o_o...

To be honest I'm in a rush so I skipped off after reading the small text (which was sooooo small that I had to put on my glasses not nice). Your maps look nice but they could do with some extra detail, they are very plain.

Oh, really? Well, it's been a while, one-time-deal. I'll make it up some way or another.

I wasn't aware people might be having trouble reading the text; it's normal-sized now. Sorry! In any case, I so very much appreciate your input. I've been working on trying to splice other tilesets into the ones I'm using, because I'm quickly finding how sparse the RTP ones are... >_< (There's a horribly thin line between having too much crap and not having enough, I fear.)
