Reives' various 3D models (mostly weaponary)

These are from around 2 years ago, back when I was fooling around with 3D Studio Max (the program that I used for making all of the models below).

I was just a beginner and couldn't do anything complicated, though. But all feedback welcomed. :)

My very first model (I actually used this in Quintessence's battle system intro animation):

Some kind of a crystal sword that'd hurt your hand to grip:

A wooden sword with "wings" that apparently do nothing but add weight:

Errm... I'm not going to say anything for this one:

A (seemingly radioactive) glaive:

. . . Some dagger:

Bows and arrows:

Annnd the last model I made before I quit; it was actually my first and only commission. It was such an annoyance to replicate an exact model out of the concept art given that I haven't modeled another ever since. :p (And I ended up giving it to the customer for free, heh.):

And that's it. :> All feedback welcomed. Who knows, I might try 3D modeling again in the future, it's actually pretty fun.

So, I don't wanna sound like a prick, but were those intended to look like really good N64 graphics? I actually don't mean that as an insult, becuase it gave me this really cool sense of nostalgia.

I'm partially referring to the low-poly nature of them, but mostly the texturing you use on the blades it's really interesting!

You do really well at banging out shapes, there. Good job!

I didn't really have an intention for siding with with anything, but I just sticked with what I got from messing around with the shapes when they looked easy on the eye. Partly because I didn't really know a lot of the functions to round off edges and etc. back then (and still don't), heheh.

Thanks! :) And glad that it brought back some memories for ya.

Wow, I recognize MAX's default materials there :] Care to share some swords? They're just good enough to make a small sprite, and I nedd to do plenty of 'em ;)

If only 3dsMax wasn't 500-something dollars I would get it for sure. That's really the only reason why I wouldn't get it. Modeling does take awhile so don't expect to just get this program and instantly think you can make something like those right away. Modeling, texturing, camera postioning, all that stuff can take hours. 90 percent of all modeling programs cost money. 3dsMax is different because it's like maya and a gamemaker shoved in one. So if he really wanted to, he could use those models in a game some day and you might just see it and say, "hey I remember seeing those models before, that guy really put some hard work into them"

So the message here is, be thankful for him for showing his work at all after all the time he put into it, instead of asking him to do some work for you.

The student/faculty version is less than 200. The one I used was actually owned by a relative who's minoring in visual-art, though. Back then it was version 5 or 6 if I remember right.

And I'm okay with you using them to make icons, Ar. Credit if you want, not too big of a deal though since it's just icons.

But I'd need the models of those weapons ^_^ I'd like to give them some nice materials, and render a bit bigger than standard icons :)

Oh okay. I'll see if I can dig them up for ya then, they should be on my old desktop. Have been a few years though, so no promises.

Wow, that's cool! I should check out this "3D Max" sometime.

$1200+... yeah, you should ^_^

Anyway, I am taking a course on how to use 3Ds max, and am struggling a little with it...

Not really struggling, but just not getting a lot of it. XD

But anyway, those swords look like they would be from Warcraft 3 or something ^_^

I'd recommend downloading trials (if available) to see what fits your needs before buying it. I've done the mistake of buying crap software before. Also, come on kraft, being a master of mapping, did you really expect the triviality that is 3d modelling to present any challenge whatsoever?

No ^_^

I can model pretty well, I just have a hard time placing textures on it...
(next chapter ^_^)

I will post some of my models sometime soon in this forum... :D

Texturing is one... Rendering it well is another :D
Also, don't worry if your first steps are rather like crawling... For the first two weeks with 3dsMax I've been using mostly boxes, and couldn't do anything to them. Now it's... it's better ^ _ ^.
