Registering programs proccess in windows

Well, I have had this doubt for years, and I want simply to know how programs are registered when entering the license(For example) on windows, where is that data stored, and how programs can read that data. Someone knows?

Registry probably...

many programs got their serial there...

They have their serials there, but the best ones are based of a specific key in your C:\Windows\System32\something folder. That key gets updated with your hardware, and is unique to your computer. In fact, I could give you my RMXP key info from the Protexis folder in my registry, and all it would do is give you an expired trial version of the program, becasue it's partially based on this system key that I mentioned.

It is mostly dependent on what the manufacturer does. Warcraft III doesn't store it's serials in the registry or the Windows folder. I'm sure it's still stored in userland, though. Neverwinter Nights stores it in a *.ini file. It's dependent on the developer-

If you need to generate a serial on your computer send for an activation code, it's mostly in the Windows folder.

If you're looking to generate a key, there's an interface in the windows API for doing so based on a system's unique ID. Where to put it is up to you. I don't know what it is offhand, but you might ask over in the programming forum. I know Alexander Moreau does .NET programming so he may have an idea. IMO copy protection is a huge waste of time though; I've never met a program that I couldn't find a crack for with twenty minutes of diligent research. It'll only be a barrier to the most inept of people, who are likely to either not use your software or buy it if they want it anyway.

Try finiding a crack for something less popular than Photoshop, and you'll find a lot of programs that are insasnely difficult to get a crack for without paying a site like usenet, which is what you're trying to avoid in the first place.

I do use programs less popular than Photoshop. I'd post some links, but for two reasons: one, it's against site rules, and two I'm afraid a bunch of people would start blindly clicking on things and end up with a bunch of nasty crap, then blame me for posting the links. I seriously have almost never found a piece of software I couldn't find a crack for. Sure there have been a couple obscure and strange little software toys or utilities, but those are rare  and easily replaced with something crackable. Also, protip: there are usenet archives that don't cost a dime to browse through and a handy thing called IRC if you can't find it on the web : )

Honestly, I used to do that all the time, and I found that there were some programs that were all but impossible to find, usually because the companies that owned them were a little too into cease and desist orders, etc. Try finding the latest version of Corel's DVD MovieFactory. (I believe it is DVD MovieFactory 6 Plus that I've been looking for) I've searched for version 6 of that thing on and off for the past three or so years. If you find it, I'll be amazed. (And I'm talking completely free, I'm pretty sure it's a paid download on usenet)
