Rap music

I know many people that dislike rap music. Reasons they dislike it go from they just don't like the beat to they hate the message it sends. What about you? Personnally I love the beats of rap music and some songs can have deeper lyrics than what most people think. Some songs I can think of are

Beautiful by Eminem
"And to the rest of the world, god gave you the shoes
That fit you, so put em on and wear em
And be yourself man, be proud of who you are
Even if it sounds corny,
Don't ever let no one tell you, you ain't beautiful"

Where is the Love by Black Eyed Peas & Justin Timberlake
"People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek
Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love,
The love, the love"

My question is if you think rap music has potential to do good for society or if it is always going to be negative in most peoples eyes.

it's the same deal as most other genres; there's a lot of terrible stuff you gotta wade through to get to the good.

I don't see why people sweat the subject matter, though. rap is good or bad on its own merits; it doesn't matter what it's about. who actually uses musicians as role models? most musicians are terrible, shallow people.

The thing is when most people think of rap music they think of gangs, sex, alchohol and drugs, which is not a trait that it shares with other genres. When really not all rap music is like that.

and when people think of pop, they think of disgustingly straightedge and celibate ubermensches with pasted-on smiles.

I mean, that's mostly true, but w/e

I can only agree with mawk, you have that in every music genre.
The mainstream rap music which portrays the gangster image with all their bling bling and naked ladies is horrible. And i'm tired of hearing about how hard it is to survive on the streets...it must be really hard when you are a millionaire.
I love rap music, but all the commercially produced stuff which is all just one pabulum ruins it.
Kanye Wests first record, Lauryn Hill, Common, some old Missy stuff is just better than the crap that's on top of the charts these days.

And I think just as any other genre it can have an impact on people, it just has to be music you can relate to.

p.s. who agrees that people should stop autotuning absolutely everything
me! autotune is the worst...I mean I wouldn't mind it here and there, but it's so overdone.

If you minus the gangs part of it, the sex, alcohol, and drugs are most notably associated with rock music and the like "sex drugs and rock 'n roll".

Rock is still considered the "lesser of two evils" when it comes to rock vrs rap by most people.

Lupe Fiasco and B.O.B. give me hope for the future of hip-hop. And even though Kanye's personality can be annoying, he is still the man.

Kanye West should still never have written that "book". He's a musician, not an author. But...I digress.

I don't listen to much rap music because it doesn't really interest me but the occasional song or two sometimes catches my attention. Eminem has some alright songs and I like some of the Black Eyed Pea's stuff. (there was a period in June when I listen to the song "Boom Boom Pow" several times a day  ) It's not my kind of music but I can definitely understand why some people get into it.

Also, some times when I'm just scribbling down random words and doing freestyle poetry I sometimes find that I am unconsciously writing rap lyrics. :p

The only thing about rap is its confusion with hip-hop. Most people confuse rap and Hip-hop as the same. I'm not sure how to explain the difference as far as comparisons go but they are two different genres. Rap is the pop version or generic version of hip-hop. Hip-hop is an art and rap is well rap.

The differences are maybe like rock and roll and heavy metal or metallica? Many people who don't normally listen to any of these music genres get them confused right? But I'm sure if someone said a certain group was rock & roll but the group was really metallica, those who listen to that group would be offended.

Same goes for Hip-hop. If you were to ask a true hip hop artist (a person who does it for the love of music and not necessarily the money) if he was a rapper he would be highly offended. Trust. Rappers are indeed cliches while hip-hop artist are considered just that, an artist.

I hope you can understand what I mean. :blank:

I think you are wrong here. Hip Hop is a culture, its based on the elements graffiti, b-boying, DJ-ing and rapping.
So rap and DJ-ing are the musical, graffiti is the visual expression and b-boying is the expression of dance of the Hip Hop culture. so rap = part of Hip Hop but Hip Hop = rap + other things.

Your right but at the same time you proved my point. Hip-hop is a culture. hip hop is a art. Sure rap is a branch of hip-hop. But at this point it has fallen so far off the tree that in my opinion being a emcee and a rapper are two different things.

Example, would you put Souljaboy in the same category as someone like NaS? Rappers are cliches because they do the same type of songs over and over. That's why gangsta rap is played out, it was a fad and everybody was doing it. People liked it at first because it was new and different but then it was overdone (like autotune) and so people began to lose interest thinking everybody can't be gangsta. You know?

Hip Hop/Rap and Rock both send out the same messages, it's just the delivery that is different.

People that are into rock will probably say something like hip hop is too "gangster" or "all they talk about is shooting and bitches" and people that like Hip Hop would probably say something like rock is too "noisy" or "all they talk about are their ex's and suicide".

I used to listen to a lot of rock when i was a kid but then as i got older I started listening to more and more rap.

(honestly though, i don't know how people can listen to lamb of god and shit like that... you can't understand a word they're saying x_x)
