Been working on making a minimalist website for my band, just static xhtml.

Urmmmm, white text on a black background is very hard to read. It's much easier to read white text on a dark gray background.

they're technically not HARD to read but i'd say HARSH to read. either way that's a cool visual example.

Black on white is unpleasant to read. White on black is actually harder to read. Black is depth, and the eye gets lost in depth.

Using dark grey is one option, another option would be to simply break up the depth with some sort of pattern. A lot of websites use scan lines, because it gives kind of a high tech fell, making it look like a security monitor. At the same time, it makes it so you are not looking at a solid wall of black. You could use a solid wall of dark grey, but it has the same effect as black, only to a lesser degree.
