Question about some methods.

I'm curious about RMXP and creating a digital novel. I've taken a peek at a few finished games here (Great stuff, btw) and I haven't noticed much digital novel creation. Is it difficult or just not liked as much?

When I say digital novel, I mean:
Typical for anime pc games. Where there is a nicely drawn background image, then a render image (usually a character) in the middle and in the foreground is the dialog box with text; which is usually at the bottom of the screen as a rectangular (some what faded) shape.

As I am brand new to this place, hopefully I can learn everything needed to perhaps move on to create like you guys. No worries for support or anything, I'm sure I can figure it out. However, getting this question answered is a next step before I move on.

Thanks again everyone,

p.s.
and if you have created a game with such a gameplay, it would be cool if you linked me to some screenshots. =D

If it is a visual novel (thats what they are called) you want to create I'd suggest using Renpy.
It was created for that very purpose and is free, so when it comes to crating VNs it is the tool you should use.
You can even greatly customize your game with a bit of Python.

Here's a link to their website: http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/Home_Page

Hope this helps

Visual Novel! That's it! I was unsure about the proper name, all I knew is it was something with novel in the title. Anyhow, thanks for the info but I'm looking to have a visual novel implemented with RPG gameplay. I was hoping that I could do such a thing with RMXP.

Enetirely possible. I just thought to mention renpy, since you talked about VNs.
Anyways: What you could do is the good old show picture command. Just show a picture that totally fills out the screen as your background than use pictures with higher ID's to show your character graphics (with them having a transparent BG, either because they are .pngs or with RMXPs import feature). Easy as that.

Awesome, thank you very much. ^^

I don't mean to double post but it is better than creating a new topic.

Could someone make a quick list of the many different things you can create for your game (from fighting style to puzzle types) with RMXP. I don't really feel like seeking through all the tutorials just to tally up all the forms of creation you can do in rmxp. At least list all that you know of, that would be great.

Thanks again. ^_^

Honestly... It would take hours... RMXP really isn't much limiting you.
Why not download the trial version and try it for 30 days. Fool around with it a bit and you'll see how much you can do with it. (or rather a small portion of it)

There have been many different kind of games in the past, created with rmxp. You could also try to play some of these (if it is puzzles you are interested in, try "Master of the Wind", as it has some great dungeon design)

Hope this helps

Let's see..
Games that can be made:
  • RPGs
Puzzles (pushing boxes, solving riddles, and what not)
    Visual Novels
Pokemon games (requires the 'starter kit')
3D games (There's a script for it, but it's not completed)
Games using the mouse/keyboard (requires a script 'AWorks Input Module')
    Games using Mode07 view.

Things you can customize:
  • The menu (the options and what they do)
The battle system (download one you like, there are tens of them)
    The keys
The resources (There are rips from games, or original ones to download)
    The screen resolution
Movement: use 8-way directions, move pixel by pixel (default is 1 tile at a time, 4 directions)
The number of save files (script), using save points or not.
Message system: showing a face beside the text, or having a comics style talk bubble.
The number of people in the party (script)

You can also add completely new things using scripts and events, like a HUD, a Day/Night system, quest-taking system, crafting system and more.

Games you shouldn't attempt with RMXP
(possible, but not recommended)
Fighting games like super smash brothers.
Online games.
Platform games
War games like World of War craft
1st person shooting games

Thanks for the response, silver wind. =D

I have another question. I've played many different games created by users on this forum, some pretty awesome stuff.

I'm curious about the end process of the game as I've noticed a few games are very laggy where as others run flawlessly. Is this due to the scripting? or....

No problem. :)
About your question, Using too many events on the same map may cause lag. There is a script called 'Anti-lag' to prevent it. But you don't need that many events normally. I never encountered a script that caused lag, and I've pretty much re-written every class in the game in my project, and added thousands of lines of scripts.
