Preferred Combat 2D RPG

Do you prefer...
Gameboy Legend of Zelda / Final Fantasy Adventure style combat?
Final Fantasy 1-6 style combat?
Or
Tales of Destiny style combat (which is instanced but still hack and slash like Zelda)?

I prefer FF1-6 style but I might prefer Tales of Destiny if there wasn't so much stuff on screen.

What do you prefer?

Tales of Destiny isn't...hack n' slash, it's an action RPG with fighting game elements (I guess that's the best way to describe it).

action >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> scrolling through menus

seriously i dont even understand how you people think rpgs are fun

Final Fantasy 1-10 all have the same style of combat. Tales of games are action RPGs like Dop said but still have some menu elements and whatnot.

Personally I can deal with either as long as the game is good, like Final Fantasy VI. Id prefer action RPGs though, like Brave Fencer Musashi or Secret of Evermore because they are way more engaging and give you a feel for the game better than scrolling though menus.

i personaly don't mind the turn based style of FF but i much perfer Baldur's gate style where you can pause if needed and queue attacks (yes i do just realised that i compared a JRPG with a WRPG). as fun as they both are Monkey island wins but :P

Dude, this is an RPG Maker forum.  What do you expect?

I personally like the traditional turn-based battles as long as they have something special.  Sometimes the little things can make a big difference.

Wait, Missingno, I was under the distinct impression that you liked the Pokemon games.

yes i like one series of games out of a million within a genre that generally bores me

YOU GOT ME HARD MAN!! YOU GOT ME HARD

Mine is Zelda for sure, next is FF I-X style.

As for Tales.... from the impression I've gotten from Phantasia's remake @ GBA, it is full of shit-lag and glinch. I know that won't happens in other console version, but I've enough trauma.

i like anything. sometimes i'm in the mood for action, and sometimes I'm in the mood for strategy/menus.

A lot of rpgs are just basically random battles where you hit "attack" 10,000 times, rinse, repeat though. I like RPGs which are challenging enough to force you to stretegize, without throwing so many monsters at you that you feel numb, but I also like action-y stuff for more mindless fun.

... I wasn't really trying to "get you"

... was just curious.

Sorry for asking?

Turn based or ATB if:
  • The enemies have some sort of AI, or battles go beyond selecting the same move over and over, (this is why I stopped playing Pokemon, it's so predictable)
  • Battles are fun, while not happening every five minutes, and most importantly, are avoidable

I don't like Tales style battle systems that much.  If you're going to go through the trouble to put in the freedom of a platformer, then make a platformer.  tales games always feel like a mish-mash for this reason.

Phantasia was crap period. Try Tales of the Abyss. It has the best one so far...

I kinda of like Turn-Based battles based off of initiative. Different actions add more initiative and you cannot act again until it reaches 0.

fyi, it's actually more of a RPG/Fighting series. Dunno how it's similar to platformers besides the ability to jump really.

When I saw "Preferred Combat 2D" I didn't see the "RPG" part and immediately thought "Metroid Fusion". Man, I love that game.

For RPG's...hmmm...I'm not a big fan of action RPG's (excluding Zelda, but that's not really an RPG anyway) I prefer the good ol' ancient turn-based battlers like in the old Final Fantasy's.
