Practicing Maya

So, I'm learning Maya right now and I'm trying to model a mech. Here's what's done so far. I have more than a few gripes with it, the odd proportion for one, but yeah it's 5am and this and a full city model are due in five hours. Nnngrgh. Will be attempting to rig this later as an experiment. Hopefully more pictures on the way as I progress.

I can't say much about this because I know virtually nothing about 3D graphic design, but regardless it's very cool and you should definitely post more.

i do alot of maya stuff with my job, almost completely in regards to lighting, if you need help with that latter, please feel free to PM me. i like what you have going so far. do you have sketches thats based off of or did you just jump in and start working? also, whats your plan for texturing the model? are you going for high or low polygon count? are you making the model for a image or are you going to rig and animate it? wow that reads like a rant lol, im just curious.

edit: oh ya, i have some good bump maps for metal somewhere. ill see if i can find them

Great stuff, thanks! Right now I'm trying to work on my modeling, texturing, and lighting. Modeling's basic enough and feels like I can improve with practice.Texturing, I've just been using the basic components for home made stuff. I only ever use bumps, speculars, etc when I find sets online, but yeah those things are only ever useful for common objects. When making your own characters/objects that might not fit into anything supplied it gets trickier. Lighting, I use the basic stuff. I've had very little instruction on it but I'm going to try to learn how to work with mentalray over my spare time.

Anyway, the final product turnaround:

I was pressed for time so I rushed working on the head. As expected, tapering the legs down killed the leg's proportions something awful but all in all I'm pretty happy about how it turned out.

Hahah man this takes me back. On my school we got classes in 3DsMax, and making sort of a robot like that was one of our first assignments to become familiar with the program. Good times.

So I've personally worked with 3DsMax for years (I'm not that good at it though) because it's apparently one of the most used 3D programs in the game industry, the other being Maya. That said, I've always been curious about Maya and looking forward to seeing this topic develop.

I've had to take an introductory course in 3DS Max as well. Personally I found modeling in it frustrating but that could have been because of longer prior exposure to Maya. Still, I found Max easier for animating stuff and effects.
