the only bar in my town was shut down because the building is over 100 years old and is ready to collapse any day now
in most places in america since prohibition, a "neighborhood pub" isn't possible. there are strict zoning laws. commercial and mixed zones can have buildings that distribute booze, but only if licensed, and only if specially licensed and a certain distance from schools can they distribute hard liquor--unless categorized as a restaurant (idk zoning laws are retarded). residential zones cannot support bars.
basically it means you can't have a bar within walking distance unless you live downtown, where zoning is sometimes mixed. usually in a seedier part of town, too, since bars typically lower property value.
and they wonder why there is so much drunk driving. so retarded.
you can get booze at a lot of chain restaurants, which Tampa is a hotbed of (ugh), but at those places it's like $7-9/martini and fuck that running

1.) when was the residential area built (zoning laws were relatively lax until about the 60's-70's)
2.) a 5-minute driving distance means that it's still like 3-5 miles away, which isn't really considered walking distance (not when drunk especially!) ... zones are typ measured in feet and yards, not miles
especially in the south, and in "yuppie" neighborhoods, there is a strong "neo-prohibition" attitude. ever since prohibition drinking has been p much considered a form of debauchery, grouped in with strippers and tobacco paraphernalia sales. views have become slightly more lax in the past decade, but there are still enough hypocrites out there who thumb their noses at drunkenness while hiding a flask behind their bible. i never really saw the attitude until i moved to a red state, but the zoning laws are p much everywhere. people just assume that if it exists and it's fun, it will pollute society somehow.

in san diego i used to go to this adorable tavern that looked a lot like that and it was awesome but the drinks were expensive b/c it was in the rich part of town :/
