I think it is Adobe now, but a Flash player, as well as an update to Windows Media Player (I think it is 11 now) Any drivers for your hardware, RMXP, quicktime and iTunes, if you have an iPod. (But not if you don't have an iPod, it messes with the file types and affinitys) The new MSN messenger, or AIM, whatever you like, and Photoshop or GIMP, Anvil Studio, if you want to make midis, and any other product of interest.

Antivirus, antispyware and firewalls are for wimps. Not suggested yet:

foobar2000: The only worthwhile media player for Windows. Winamp, WMP, and iTunes are crap in comparison. Get some components (I like columns, album art, browser panels, and search) and start fiddling. Once you get it right you will never want to use anything else ever again. It's also really easy on your system resources.
uTorrent: BitTorrent is a lovely thing, and uTorrent is by far the best client. It has all the features you could ever want and is one of the most lightweight programs I have ever even heard of. It's seriously incredible.
GAIM: It's a pretty standard multi-protocol chat client. It's a little heavy and ugly since it uses GTK, but I'd say most other chat clients (even the official ones) suck even more, with maybe the exception of that Google Talk thing that never went anywhere.
X-Chat: Real men use X-Chat for IRC. It's also GTK, so it's a little ugly, but again it's still the best. It supports Ruby and Python for plugins too, which is awesome.
Cygwin: If you like using the command line, you'll need this if you're using Windows. You probably don't, but whatever.
ZSNES: Awesome console, awesome emulator.
