PC as an amp?

Can I use my PC to play an electric guitar? Are there programs for that?

I have access to two guitars so could easily take one to uni, but I only have one amp and would rather not buy another one.

Well, there are input programs like FL and Audacity, but it would require a USB or specialized microphone input.
Generally the Amp sized audio jack doesn't come standard on computer ports.

Also why not bring the first amp?

wat? It would not require any special input. All you need is your standard 1/4'' guitar cable (which I assume you have) and a 1/4'' (female) to 1/8'' (male) adapter, then you can plug it right into your mic or line in port. They are like $3 at radio shack, but I don't know if you have radioshack in the UK. You should be able to find them at any similar electronics store.

I personally use FL for this, and you can get various free VST effects online. I recommend Shred from acme bar gig. Shred is basically a preamp and cabinet modeller, and it's pretty decent.

Thanks, I'll try that. I actually already have an adaptor but it's male to female... can I plug that end into my guitar, and run a thin line to my PC instead of the other way round?

Yeah, it would work, but I would think finding a double sided 1/8'' line would be tougher than finding the other adapter, unless you already have one.
