Parkour (aka "Extreme Walking")

As lame and humorous as "Extreme Walking" may sound, it's actually really cool.  Basically, it's navigating around in an urban enviornment in style, pulling off backflips, jumps, rolls, and tons of other tricks.  You might want to check it out sometime.  I've actually seen a few of these guys before in Atlanta.  It's pretty awesome.

It's less EXTREME WALKING and more just FREEFORM RUNNING. It looks semi-cool in videos and stuff but at the same time it seems like a pretty stupid thing to do on its own. When combined with other stuff (like running from badguys or whatever in movies) it's significantly more interesting.

Example: The first scene of the James Bond movie.. Casino Royale (the newest)

Woot! "Parkour" & "Free Running" kicks ass!

I'm not much good at it, but I can do the roll thing off high heights which is very helpful in airsoft/paintball.

Parkour is not really about doing back flips and similar tricks. It's about getting from point A to point B in the fastest possible way. (There might be a scenario where there would be a purpose behind a back flip other than it just looks cool)

I agree with missingno with that parkour becoming vastly more interesting combined with other stuff.

They do it at school, it's quite worrying seeing two kids fly past a second story window. Cool though. (Technically running away from your maths teacher is the same as running away from your bad guy with machine guns :) )

I know it as "Free Running" though.

I first know of parkour when watching a french movie title "Yamakasi". It's really cool and require arobatic skills which really useful in dire situation.

Yeah I know of it as Free Running. I think it's pretty kickass to have so much agility. it doesn't really meet any end on its own, but it still looks cool. I wish I could do it :(

Free Running and Parkour are considered different forms by their practitioners. Zeriab hit it on the head. Free-running is more aesthetic. It can be said to have a parallel between Capoeira and break-dancing: capoeira is a combination of combat martial art and dance aiming to confuse the opponent with unpredictable moves, while break dancing takes some of the more visually pleasing motions of caipoera and turns it into a straight dance form, albeit with a highly competetive atmosphere.

As much as I dislike using wikipedia as a resource, it does contain a decent article on parkour.

And, well, free running as well.

My first encounter was this very youtube video..
I was randomly browsing youtube at the time, and I stumbled across it.
The music was cool, those guys were crazeh.

This video is just awesome :O

I also know it as free running -- me and my friends used to do some psuedo free running for for shits and it was pretty fun

I'd love to be able to do this, but I probably wouldn't be able to in a million years. :(

Anyway, there's a game coming out...I forget exactly what it's called, but it's essentially a free-running action game. The trailer seemed a little stupid the first time I saw it because I thought it was just a game where you free-run, but apparently it's an FPS/action kinda thing, too.

I think free running is really interesting, and while I'd love to be able to do it, I have all the athletic aptitude of a dead frog. But watching those guys makes me remember that we're descended from monkeys.

I know, Free Running is the "Tricked out" version of Parkour.
